Sliding Down the Razorblades of Life, chapter 4

Title: Sliding Down the Razorblades of Life
Disclaimer: I don't own any characters from Doctor Who, I just play with them for fun.
Fandom: Doctor Who
Characters: River Song, The Master (Delgado)
Rating: R
Complete: 4/4
Summary: River Song's last term at UniversityAN: Many of my stories get a “soundtrack” when I write them, a certain song that I hear in my head. This fic has “Mastermind” by The Divine Comedy, fittingly enough from an album called Regeneration.

Last chapter. I have enjoyed writing this very much.

Chapter 1, Gossip In the Library

Chapter 2, Mid-Term

Chapter 3, The Still Centre

Chapter 4, The Razorblades of Life

“Nervous of the graduation ceremony?”

“A little. It seems a bit strange that I have managed to get to the end of it.”

“You have worked hard for it and the doctorate is well earned.”

“Yes, yes, I know.” River fidgeted a little, checking the mirror once again to make sure everything was in place, especially the heavy flower garland she wore as an indication to her new status. “You will come?”

“Of course. But I will leave tonight, I have already lingered here much longer than I intended.”

“Can I see you before you go? One last time?”

“If you wish.”

Despite his words the Master didn’t return to his rooms after the ceremony. Instead he went to a shady corner of the university yard, almost invisible in the darkness by the low-hanging branches of a tree. He waited there patiently until he could hear River’s voice floating toward him as she bid her friends good night and then he could see her quite clearly as she passed a lamp. She looked happy, almost dancing over the grass, but then she stepped into darkness again and the he heard her cry out as the Church of the Silence descended on her. When the anguished scream was cut short the Master made an involuntary move to come to her aid, but then he shrank back into the shadows instead. He waited until her captors had vanished with River and then he went to the place of the struggle. The flowers she had worn around her head lay scattered on the ground and he picked up one. It was so badly crushed it fell apart in his hand and he stared at the petals for some time. Then he let them fall again and he too went into the darkness and disappeared.

Right... they did mention, when they were preparing her to kill the Doctor that she had just gotten her doctorate, didn't they? I didn't think they meant immediately after graduation, though... nice twist to that one!

Aw, I felt just a smidge of sympathy for the Master here, when he made as if to rescue her. Then he just slunk back into the shadows and left. Oh well...

Well, within the frameworks of my fics he can't save her as he when he meets her for the first time in a fic I wrote called A Conversation were she is in prison. And she is in prison as a result of being abducted and forced to kill the Doctor. So he would probably screw up the timelines of he changed something. If he feels any regrets for not coming to her rescue, well, a little, I think. :D

Right... Time Lords, always having to think of the time lines and what can never be. I did read that one, too.

Yes, I figured even evil Time Lords would feel some duty to the laws of time. :)

Indeed... except for that one time with the Time Lord Victorious. That really upset me, that the Doctor went so "off the rails" crazy that he did that. No one to stop him....

I agree! I didn't like that either.

That whole "No one to stop you" line had me sobbing over Donna. If she'd have been there, this never would have happened. She got to know the concept of fixed events, when she could push to save someone... and when she shouldn't push.... but make sure he preserves the time lines. He really spiraled out of control without her wise counsel. It seems she was his compass.

Yes indeed! I love Donna! Story-wise it's a rather clever build-up to the new Doctor, but oh, wasn't it a hard watch?

[identity profile] dm12.livejournal.com 2015-01-28 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It was, but there were only two ways Donna could go. She had already proven she has the stamina and wherewithal to find him, and she promised him her forever (knowing that he would outlast her), and she is not the type of person to break a promise.

Therefore, she either had to die, or totally forget about him and anything she had done while she was with him. Total re-boot to who she was before she met him. A terribly hard watch; I almost think that going with her wishes to stay with him until she burned would have been more merciful.

The Doctor, however, is terrible with loss and is selfish. He does not consider what his friends want, never gives them a choice (unlike his enemies). So he did what he wanted, violating her choice and her mind, and she ended up as a shell of her former self, merely alive instead of living.

And, he was so panicked about the whole thing, he didn't really wipe her mind, just blocked the memories. If he had really wiped everything, people wouldn't have had to walk on eggshells around her, she wouldn't have started to remember things... and that defense system he gave her, total rubbish, too! Falling unconscious after blasting everything around her? Really? Suppose they were friends? As for enemies, suppose they found her unconscious and realized who she was? Bad situation all around!

I could go on and on, really being upset about it, but dramatically, it made the best sense. It showed the Doctor's not so nice/selfish side, and showed how much she had influenced him for the good, and how much control and sanity he lost when she was gone. How he could not take on another companion, he became totally reckless, and it was only after he regenerated that he was able to even begin to think about finding someone.

Very well put! I couldn't agree more!
