I gather that Gaudy Night was (perhaps unsurprisingly) influenced by the author's own experiences at Oxford at an earlier period, which would make it somewhat out of date even for the Thirties...
Of late I keep remembering the background comments in that novel about world crisis wobbling backwards and forwards on the brink of actual disaster :-(
