It's Book Swap Day* at the library. Last time I was lucky and found both volumes of a book by one of my favourite authors. This time I came out with almost the whole Masters of Rome series plus a bonus one about Troy, all by Colleen McCullough. Only the last one is missing from the Masters of Rome series. I'm sure I can source that some other how when I get that far. There's a lot of text to get through first. I have never actually read anything by this author before, but hey, there's literally nothing to lose by not trying and if I don't like them, they can just go back again.

*This is awesome. They do it I think once a month. You can donate books you don't want anymore (there are a few exceptions that they don't want) and you can take any books that seem interesting to you. It doesn't cost anything and you don't have to bring a book to take a book. I've found some gold nuggets there! (And a few regrets. Last time I stupidly didn't take the full set of 1001 Nights. 16 volumes. I think they were even illustrated. I don't know what I was thinking)

Well, that was unexpected and unpleasant

Though, upon reflection, it's surprising that this hasn't happened before in 30+ years of menstruation )

I'd say that was the worst thing to happen this weekend, but then I glanced at the news, and how do things keep getting worse? I thought we might at least get a reprieve over the holiday weekend, Congress would all go on vacation and not pass any terrible bills in the interim, but I guess not.

I'm not linking to it, not today. I know how to take a break, even if they don't. Take this article on amenorrhea instead.

Fandom Fifty: #19

1993. I graduated in June of this year, had committed to my late partner (and her husband) that year, got kicked out of my father's home by his wife with his assent before I even graduated, did not walk the stage... Yeah. Ups and Downs.

28 films, and I actually know I saw most of them in theater, at least half first run and the rest in the cheap second run theater (that had an arcade and mini golf and batting cages in the same complex).

sure why not do all 28 since I have nothing else on tap? )

It's been a bit of a struggle to keep the garden tended while the sun is a deadly lazer for most of the day. I try to give the plants a good soak every few days while we're in the dry period, and they're hanging in there alright, though around midday they tend to look rather unhappy until the shade moves in to give them a break. I'm still fending off bug infestations of various kinds, but seemingly with success - I have more hope than I did before that the angelica and chard will bounce back, and I caught some creepy crawlies settling in on the valerian and lobelia before they had a chance to spread their kin. I still don't feel like I'm much good at gardening, but I am learning, and that's always fun.

We've still got a good amount of garden space open where we haven't figured out what to plant yet. It's probably too late in the season to get any new spring plants in the ground, but I'm hoping there may be something we can plan to get established in fall before winter hits. I think I've had too much focus the past couple of years on growing from seed, when I'm sure there are places I can source more established plants that will be harvest-ready much sooner. Besides, most of the seeds I've got in stock are a couple years old by now, and harvested somewhat haphazardly such that I don't always know the varietal. It seems prudent to start being more picky about the specifics if I'm going to be using these plants for medicinal purposes.

Oh, and I got a tincture press this week! Handmade off etsy, significantly cheaper than the more heavy-duty industrial versions that I can't afford and which are, frankly, major overkill for the very small-scale kind of operation I've got going on. I'm excited to get to try it soon with the various things I've got macerating and infusing in the cabinet. Trying to wring all the drops out of sodden wads of herbs by hand has not been my favorite thing in the world.

I also got the little hydroponic garden set up again today, with lemon balm and dill. It's got space for eight plants, but I only put six in, since eight has always felt a little crowded and it can get hard to keep up with.

Still lots to do! I should try to get out in the backyard to keep tackling the ever-present bramble hoard from making too much headway. We've got a lot of overgrown things to clear out back there, and then we can put in more beds for veggies and whatnot for next year.

Writing About Fireworks

In honor of the Fourth of July, here are a few tidbits to enjoy.

Today's Adventures 6/28/25 -- We bought fireworks for our home show, and we watched the show in Tolono.

Fireworks 7/4/25 -- Read about our home show tonight.

Birdfeeding

Today is mostly sunny and hot.

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a mourning dove.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I checked the south lot and put topsoil in a few low spots, prior to our fireworks show tonight.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I picked up a trough pot that fell off the old picnic table, restored the curry plant and purple basil as best I could, then watered them and a few other things in the house yard.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I sowed 6 pots with mulberry seeds. Half are from a particularly pleasing mulberry sapling near the west end of the old fishpond, the other half from a mulberry that was left on the porch step as if a gift.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I watered the telephone pole garden and a few seedlings in the savanna.

My partner Doug mowed the ritual meadow and prairie paths.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I picked a handful of herbs to make a skillet scramble for supper.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I picked a handful of blackberries in the prairie garden. There are plenty left; I ran out of heat tolerance long before I ran out of berries. :D

Cicadas are singing.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- I picked a handful of blackberries in the prairie garden. Still more left, but I'll have to hunt those another day, because it is still hot and the sun is about to set.

EDIT 7/4/25 -- We did our home fireworks show.  :D  I'm sure it confused the bats and the fireflies.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

A quick entry before I go to my favorite Irish pub:
I had a great time yesterday with my friends, we went swimming and had yummy Korean barbecue chicken wings and beef noodles and great drinks and ice cream and then hung out at their house and watched Rick and Morty and listened to music.
I love America, I just FUCKING HATE TRUMP.

✨ glimmers and good things ✨

I've been wanting to get better at noticing the small, good things in my days, especially the quiet ones that are easy to miss when I'm overwhelmed, in pain, or just having a rough brain day. I keep going back to [community profile] 3_good_things_a_day but figured I'd share them here too.

So this is me, starting a little series called glimmers and good things: three things each day (or as close to daily as I can manage) that made me smile, feel seen, feel safe, or feel a tiny spark of joy.
They won’t always be profound. Sometimes they’ll be “I had a nice sandwich” or “Carlos Alcaraz didn’t destroy my soul today.” But they’ll be real, and I want to keep track of them.

three tiny joys, glimmers, or moments of soft comfort from today
🧡 Someone sent me a gorgeous pic of Darren & Simone ) they found online because they knew I’d love it and wanted to make sure I’d seen it. It made me feel so known.

📚 Seanan McGuire/Mira Grant Tumblr reblogged my review of Rolling in the Deep (!!) and I am still quietly screaming about it.

🍕 Friday night comforts: pizza, mango Pepsi Max, Nutella ice cream, and Carlos Alcaraz winning his 3rd round match against Struff. We feast. 🎾💛

That’s me for today. If you feel like sharing your glimmers, I’d love to read them 💛
Be gentle with yourself, especially if the good things were hard to find.

Check-In Post - July 4th 2025

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: What do you like to listen to / watch while crafting?

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

Star Trek AOS: One Foot in Front of the Other by Lazulisong

Fandom: Star Trek Reboot (AOS)
Pairings/Characters: Gen
Rating: Teen
Length: 1390 words
Creator Links: [archiveofourown.org profile] lazulisong
Theme: Working together

Summary: Winona is called to fix the cock-up of the Yorktown's engines. She uses one of the science-bitches to help her do it.

Reccer's Notes: This fandom has many versions of Winona Kirk. The one you get here is the engineer who does NOT fuck around and can fix anything you throw at her. She is irreverent and badass. And, in this particular story, she is wonderfully, delightfully contrasted with Spock, who is helping her fix the Yorktown engines. Yes, Spock is the science bitch.

I really can't say much more because I'm laughing too hard rereading the story in order to write this rec. Laz perfects the art of proving that swearing isn't what you do when you lack imagination. Every cuss word in this fic is a brilliant gem of hilarious, creative, and accurate speech.

Like every ridiculous fic that is very, very good, this one makes you believe that this Winona Kirk is not only possible, but is absolutely in character. It also makes you believe that this Spock is possible and will call Winona Overlord and let her call him Tiny Science-bitch.
