Doctor Who soundtrack
My flu is progressing nicely, which means staying in bed with my laptop and books. I can tell you that thinking too much about the Master when you have a temperature leads to some very strange dreams...
So, do you make soundtracks? I do it all the time, I'm from a family of musicians and putting songs that fits to what I read or watch is something I have done since I was a kid. I also get ideas on stories from music, not songfics, but music that sets the tone for what I write. The very latest was Prettiest Eyes by The Beautiful South that kick-started Crows Feet On the Prettiest Eyes.
The Divine Comedy have a whole album called Regeneration which I connect with Doctor Who even if it isn't spelled out. Especially Mastermind, which reflects a sadness that made me write Sliding Down the Razorblades of Life. I think River Song carries a sadness about her and sometimes I get that feeling from Delgado's Master as well.
So tell me what the hell is normal and who the hell is sane
And why the hell care anyway?
All the dreams that we have had are gonna prove that we're all mad and that's OK
I only recently realised that The Divine Comedy's singer, Neil Hannon actually sings two songs from the soundtrack of Doctor Who, seasons 2, Love Don't Roam and Song For Ten.
I have already posted this one, but it has so far been on repeat in my head when I write on My Pleasure, Miss Shaw.
Damaged People by Depeche Mode sums up what I think the Doctor and the Master feels about each other.
We're damaged people
Drawn together
By subtleties that we are not aware of
Disturbed souls
Playing out forever
These games that we once thought we would be scared of
When you're in my arms
The world makes sense
There is no pretence
And you're crying
When you're by my side
There is no defence
I forget to sense I'm dying
And so does Broken.
If you want control
Without any pain
How long will you suffer?
How long will you reign
You see the friend that I knew?
Cannot be found
Replaced by another
Wearing his crown
There's a place where I go
Without any sound
Only you can reach me
Only you're allowed
And you're so far away
You're so far from here
Do you remember
Our time without tears?
When you're falling
I will catch you
You don't have to fall that far
You can make it
I will be there
You were broken from the start
I connect Tom McRae with Doctor Who one the whole, probably because his texts often evolve around travels and a feeling of loss. Especially One Mississippi.
And it's one Mississippi
It is two times grip is slipping
It is three Mississippi
Time stands still
It is four Mississippi
Can we stop the clocks from ticking
It is five Mississippi
Time stands still
Can we spin the world on its axis
Can we make the clocks run backwards
Can I only change your history for a day
Elvis Costello is another artist I vaguely connect with Doctor Who. His texts are quite quirky, so I guess that's the reason. Two Birds In A Cage by Daystar Searcher is one of the best fics I have ever read and I have Green Shirt in my mind when I read it.
