The big book-purge

I’m currently purging my bookshelves, something badly needed. At the moment books are stacked on books and spill over on tables and as we don’t have room for more shelves books it it. I’m going to get rid of my old textbooks, my university days are long gone and I haven’t looked in any of those books since then. I’m also getting rid of a lot of paperbacks bought when stuck at various places with nothing to read- usually those are thrillers that I won’t read again. And I’m keeping all my constant re-reads like Bujold and Sayers- those books are easy.

But then I have a lot of books that I used to read all the time, but don’t anymore. Between eight and sixteen I re-read Tolkien over and over again. In fact, I read them so many times that I still know most of it by heart despite not having read anything by him for nearly 30 years. and I wrote fanfic! Funny, I had completely forgotten about that until right now. I invented a sister to Legolas who also joined the fellowship. She had silver hair and eyes that changes colour depending on mood and could do anything Legolas could and more. She was a terrible Mary Sue, really. (Husband just forbid me to get rid of Tolkien, so that’s settled…)

Isabel Allende is another author I used to read constantly in my late teens and early twenties. I loved them so much but after Paula I haven’t even managed to get through any newer books. and I haven’t re-read any in years. Should I still keep those, or not? I’m definitely getting rid of the ones I haven’t read, though.

Not getting rid, but getting; I have managed to find a second hand copy of Tanith Lee’s Elephantasm. I still haven’t located where my Tanith Lee-books actually are. I asked my ex to see if they were still at his place, but I doubt it. He’s very good at forwarding my stuff when it surfaces, so I think they would already have come back to me in that case.

I would be unhelpful here - don't get rid of any books! Get more room! ;-)

(I know; it's tough. And you can guarantee you're going to have a sudden need to re-read at least one thing you get rid of and curse yourself later.)

Well, we already have a large apartment... And a lot of books... I will get rid of the books I'm certain off, then we'll see. I am, luckily, at a Point in Life were re-placing books isn't an economical hardship anymore, so I Think I may leave some to chance and buy again if need be. :)

Getting rid of books is painful.

Ah, I feel you about the room problem! I'm forever trying not to spill onto my mother's shelves XD

Keep Tolkien! Sacred!

Old Mary-Sues, bless XD We all have one such in a closet somewhere. (Well, not the sexuality closet! The embarrassment closet! You get my meaning ;P)

Yes, I kept Tolkien! :D

I had clean forgotten about those. But even if I only wrote down a handful I used to think up stories before I feel asleep. And I still do! Only now I do write them down. But I think I have moved past the Mary Sue's nowadays... ;)

Good! ;)

Haha, I think up stories all the time too, way more than I actually write ;) Well, not actual stories, more like tidbits about favourite characters, nothing to write home about…

I'd say you certainly have, yes ;)

So do I! :) I have lots of bits and pieces floating around in my mind and sometimes they evolve into a story. It's a bit annoying when one imagines up a really good scene but can't find anything to hook it up with...

Hee!!! I never let go of books, but I've had a few disappear on me. I can only hope they went to good homes, you know?

We have loads of stores here that buy used books. Quite a few of them give you a good price - or even do trade ins for them. Maybe you can find such a place in your town?

*HUGS*

Yes, I know what you mean. :) There are quite a good online store in Sweden where you can list your books, so I think I will do that.
