What I have been watching

Spoilers ahead.

The second episode of Once Upon A Time was mostly not my cup of tea. You know, I get, and often approve, how the writer change and adapt the characters. I think it was rather brilliant to also make Rumple the Beast and the Crocodile. And though OUAT’s Hook has virtually only the hook in common with the psychopath captain in Peter Pan, I can live with it because considering they also changed his first name, I don’t think he was ever really intended to be the same character. But I hated what they did to poor Monte Cristo! To me it seems they needed someone out to kill the Chamings and someone remembered that Monte Cristo bloke who liked revenge. I doubt they even took the time to read the Wikipedia entry about him. And the poor handmaiden who was just thrown in to die for the sole purpose of Monte Cristo’s manpain. Nope, did not like that at all. Now they are both dead, so I suspect they will pop up in the Underworld soon enough. Also, I suspect this is also part of one of my biggest beefs of OUAT- how they throw in a multitude of characters instead of properly ground a few.

Still not very keen on the Evil Queen, though I’m glad she isn’t out to kill Regina, but to corrupt her. Didn’t like her flirting with Rumple either. The Evil Queen never struck me to need a man, and I’m not particular fond of women flirting to get what they want- I don’t doubt Evil Queen has some ulterior motive.

I did like Hook’s and Belle’s brief scene together, though I hope this isn’t a prelude to another hook up. (I promise, pun not intended.) And I like Emma actually acknowledging she needs help and I’ve always liked Jiminy Cricket, so I’m glad he is bad.

No Jafar, Aladdin and Jasmine in this episode- I hope they will show up soon. I wonder if it isn’t Jafar Emma is fighting and not Regina as she thinks. S/he seemed a bit too tall to be Regina.

Husband and I watched the first episode of Luke Cage and found it incredibly boring. I want to like it because I adored Luke in Jessica Jones and it picked up a bit at the end, so we have agreed to give it another shot.

I really liked Westworld though, even if I did a bit of a hiccup over the rape scene, which I did not expect at all. Well, it’s clear that this is a world where humans go to go whatever they please, however evil. But I’ve seen the movie with Yul Brynner and there the Man in Black is a host who has broken his programming. Here he presents himself as a human. I suspect he may actually be a host with a sense of self, which means he is pretty evil all around anyway. Ed Harris was definitely chilling, especially as he usually plays Good Guys. I liked Dolores too, though I fear she is programmed to be the perpetual victim of the Man in Black. I hope she gets to take her revenge. Sir Anthony Hopkins was of course good, and the rest of the cast too.

It’s a very interesting concept of AI’s being made so human they develop a sense of self. I’ve been fascinated by it ever since I saw the original Westworld sometime in my teen. I can recommend Tad William’s Otherland-series where the AI’s are placed in virtual realities, for some interesting thoughts on it. Also Pastworld, a YA book by Ian Beck which is clearly inspired by Westworld only set in a late 19th century London scenario.
