What I have been watching
Spoilers under cut.
I’m happy to say that the two last episodes of OUAT has been much better than the rest of the season. I think I shall check who it is who writes those horribly saccharine and clinging episodes and avoid them in the future. Now if we could just get some more Jafar.
Husband and I watched the two fort few episodes of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and liked it. Rather to my surprise because A. I have never liked any Douglas Adams adaptations before. B. It’s not an adaption actual of any of the books and C. It takes place in USA instead of England. Also, D. I never been keen on Elijah Wood. But it works! The books are not non-entities, but something that has taken place before the show. Dirk Gently is an Englishman and the reason to why he is in America is because he ha travelled there in his investigation. And Samuel Barnett may not be pudgy, but otherwise he is pretty much as I have always envisioned Dirk. And Elijah Wood as Todd, the reluctant assistant, is really good. I like the other character’s as well, especially Todd’s sister Amanda. The show is actually as fast paced, odd and filled with random things which isn’t so random as the books are. They may not have done a straight-up adaptation, but they have managed to caught the soul.
My husband says it’s rather like Doctor Who on speed, so now I totally want a fic where a very young Dirk Gently meets a madman in a box and gets inspired for life. I also, rather unexpectedly, ship Amanda with the Rowdy 3.
I still like Lucifer, but though the first season got better and better, this season feels a bit more wobbly. Probably because they have introduced much darker themes. I don’t mind that, but after making Lucifer such a humorous character last season, it’s not easy to strike the proper balance. I like that they have toned down Chloe’s effect on Lucifer, though. Even if I wonder if Mum will know what it all means. I base that on the fact that she hasn’t met Chloe yet and that Lucifer hasn’t told her about it. I love Maize and I really loved Trixie’s reaction on Maize’s real face. I have been waiting for her real face! I also think they handled Doc’s reaction to Lucifer’s real face.
Supernatural has been very good so far, even if I’m still not convinced about the London Men of Letters-plot. But the writing has been solid and the plots pretty interesting. I liked last episode and hope we will see more of the witch/hunter twins. Also, it had Jody. I love every episode with Jody.
We have also watched Conviction, which we like despite the unrealistic premises. I blame Hayley Atwell for that. And we are on the last season of Charmed. I find Billie the Teenage Witch incredibly annoying. And I guess her sister will turn out to be this season Big Bad. And we have seen a couple of more episodes of Luke Cage and quite like it.
I quite liked the last episode of AHS, and felt it could have been given more room. The butchering of all but one took way too many episodes, and for me it lost a lot of tension when I knew only one person would survive. Also, I have never been a fan of the kind of horror movies where people are killed messily one by one. But I enjoyed the last episode and I liked Lee’s redemption. I would have loved to see her standing up to the Butcher too! I also liked that you never get a really good look at the real ghosts. Too often you are allowed to see to much of the monster, which usually makes it less scarier. I also loved that both the butcher and the little girl ghost wore correct early 17th century fashion, while the actor who played them wore the kind of generic “old time” costumes drama documentaries often put on their actors. Really nice costuming there. I also enjoyed the digs at our media society throughout the season. Also, the return of Lana Winters which I guess is the first step of tying all the seasons together.
Kid and I are on season 3 of Grimm. He likes it a lot and I enjoy the rewatch. I felt after the last season that it was OOC for Sean Renard to ally himself with Black Claw, but he is a lot more morally ambiguous in the first seasons than he is in season 4. I think I will have to revise my view and say he has a pragmatic look at life. He wants is power and control and he will ally himself with those who can give him that.
