What I have been watching this summer
Spoilers for Game of Thrones, and kinda, sorta for Outlander.
TV summer lull. Husband and I have re-watched Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. I adore that show! Great casting and clothes. And the chemistry between Miss Fisher and Jack are wonderful. I very much a want a season four. Now we are doing Charmed. I used to watch it when Kid was a baby, but I only saw up until season four, or so, and missed quite a few episodes to boot. It is pretty nice to rewatch..A bit silly and saccharin at times, but mostly good fun. I have just enjoyed Arnold Vosloo as a demon who likes to make people want to kill themselves. Also, the charmed sisters behave very sisterly to each other, which makes them real.
I’ve also watched The Borgias, which I hadn’t seen before. The first season was a bit dull, but it got better when Lucrezia stopped being so naive. And it is alway fun to watch Jeremy Iron’s chew scenery. I liked the costumes too as I happily only have a general idea of the fashion of the time, so I can’t nitpick. a friend of mine says she gets annoyed when they wear Florence fashion in Rome. I also wonder why Versailles have been so hyped as the steamiest ever on TV. It is a lot more of it, and kinkier too, in The Borgias.
I have also re-watched Sense8, and liked it as much the this time around.
Currently I’m re-watching Once Upon A Time In Wonderland. I don’t know why it got such a bad rep, because in many ways I think it’s better than the original show. Partly because there are less characters, so there is more time to dwell on each character, while OUAT sometimes feels rather rushed. But also because I think the Knave is one of the best heroes- or rather anti-heroes, this show has produced. He is funny, cynical, selfish and quite cowardly and really brave when he needs to. And though both he and Alice have their own True Loves, a lot of the show focus on their friendship. Jafar is a very good villain with a nice backstory which explain well why he is the way he is, but also not excuse him- he is not a nice man. I really like Naveen Andrews’ Jafar, but I’m confident Oded Fehr will do him justice. I do hope he will not just be an one-episode villain.
As for Alice- well, Alice was the first literary character I identified with, and I can’t say she this Alice have much to do with the original one. However, she is quite good anyway- rather naive, clearly damaged by her family, but determined to save her True Love and has a lot of back bone. The Red Queen took longer to warm to. I think Emma Rigby’s Barbie face has something to do with that. But once you realise how deeply unhappy the Red Queen is, she becomes more interesting. She seems both brittle and strong at the same time, which is quite interesting.
The worst thing with the show is that it almost completely filmed on a green screen. I don’t mind that Wonderland is a garish and rather weird universe- that fits, but I find it a bit hard to watch a whole episode with that kind of sharp outline every character get when the background is computer generated. And I think it may very well be one reason to why people didn’t liked it, even if they weren’t quite aware of it. And, of course, Alice True Love, Cyrus the Genie, is rather bland. It’s fun that he is the Damsel in Distress who spends large part of the show imprisoned, while Alice take the active part in rescuing him.
I don’t think I ever told you what I thought of the ending of. Game of Thrones. I think it came to a rather good conclusion, if you ask me. I appreciate that we now have strong females in all the important spot. Yara with Dany, Sansa with Jon and Brienne.. And I’m glad sansa finally could step away from being the perpetual victim. And Cersei on the iron throne. I’m a bit miffed Margery died, though, even if her grandmother are still going strong. And Arya is finally back with a vengeance.
And no more Ramsay, thank you very much! My predictions about Jon’s parent’s and the Hound not being dead held true. And though all too briefly, we had Ian McShane and Essie Davis. Now I only hope Jamie finally break off from Cersei.. All in all I liked this season a lot more than the last.
To my surprise I rather liked the ending of Outlander. Brianna and Roger were quite engaging, so I think I’ll give the next season a go anyway. I also noticed that we didn’t get to see Black Jack die. It may mean we will get more Tobias Menzies, even if his characters are dead in the books.
Preacher was quite good, though just like Lucifer I felt that it didn’t really pick up until the last three episodes. Cassidy must be my favourite vampire since Spike. I looked forward to watch Graham McTavish, especially since his character has died on Outlander, but at least in this season he was badly underused. On the other hand, just like Lucifer, the whole season felt a bit like a prologue, so hopefully the next season will do better.

GoT was brilliant this season. Lady Mormont was my new favorite and I am certainly happy about Sansa taking charge...

He is! He really brought it because he was def two totally different characters. I was kind of surprised that he wasn't also Alex Randall , but then they would've had to do some Orphan Black CGI magic. I really like the actor that they got for Alex btw. This show is on point with who they cast.

I wondered if they would give him Alex too, but I’m glad they didn’t they didn’t. I’m sure he would have aced it, though.

I was a bit surprised at how many feelings I had about Andy and his relationship with Prue. (Also: I'd forgotten that he only lasted one season.)
