A/N: Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] moshesque for beta. Very short.

Being brave may not be so easy when tested.

It can be very easy to be brave when braveness isn't questioned. Little girls may be able to stand against sweet talk and flattery- at least the second time. But pain and despair loosens tongues. And blood.

How much does one need to bleed before ones life runs away with it? Wendy doesn't know, but she suspects that Hook does. He explains to her, very precisely, everything he does. That he doesn't cut her where the large blood vessels run. That he doesn't slice muscles beyond repair. Just enough for blood and pain. And it never ends.

The world grows so narrow. It's her and the Captain and the dark space around them, and the lantern that swings to and fro when the ship moves. There are the shackles that prevents her from moving away from the hook, and there are the never-ending questions.

Sometimes she is alone, and then the blood slowly stops trickling and scabs form, and there is enough space to breathe and to realise that she hasn't been there all that long- yet. And that no one will come for her, because no one knows where she is.

And then it starts again. Steel against skin, first cold, then warm, and then the pain is awakened again, and she screams, though she hasn't much voice left now. And then she can't anymore. Wendy wants to, wants to be brave and strong and not speak, but she can't anymore.

Her finger leaves a smudged red spot on the map- blood telling the tale of her betrayal.

She lies still, feeling a bit relieved that it's all over now. Death doesn't seem so bad anymore- it feels almost welcome. The Captain crouches beside her, looking at her with his blue, blue eyes, looking through the blood and grime and tears. He sees her and Wendy can feel fear grip her again because she knows it isn't over.

“Tell me, did Pan have you?”

“I don't understand'”

A shadow of a smile flickers over Hook's dark face.

“Of course not.” He caresses her hair, stroking the matted curls away from her face. “I'm not through with you yet. You will bleed once more for me- in time. All in good time.”

He leaves, leaving his words behind. How much blood is enough blood for a black-hearted pirate to be satisfied?
