I know, I know- third post today. But there won't be anything more until Monday.

Fanworks meme: Sometimes it's okay to pimp yourself. Post a list of your top five favourite fics fanworks you've written/drawn/painted/made/knitted/compiled..., regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most.

A Place in the Shadows (Penny Dreadful) This fic so easy to write and fell in place almost effortlessly, and still turned out almost exactly as I had envisioned it, a story about friendship and still-warm sponge cake.

Professor Keller (Doctor Who) I rarely write long fics- even my multi-chapters have fairly short, and fairly few, chapters. This is by far my longest fics, and my most ambitious. I worked hard on trying to give this story a mounting horror- I even re-wrote it completely, and I think I did fairly well.

A Conversation in the Yellow Drawing-Room, And Other Letters To Mrs Strange (Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell) This fic was a complete joy to write, from beginning to end. I’m pleased with Lady Pole’s determination to save herself, and it’s so much fun to write Childermass.

But A Dream (Victoria) I think this is lovely. And I enjoyed writing it a lot.

Ghosts (The Mummy) I feel this fic is a bit clunky, but some parts I think are pretty great. And it was a lot of fun to write.

I have the flu. I’ve had it since last Sunday so I’m on the mend now, but still, feel weak as a kitten. Hence the radio silence. I have been reading though, even if I haven’t had the energy to comment, and seen this fanfic meme floating around. It feels like something I can manage to do.

Rules: Go to your AO3 works page, expand all the filters, and answer the following questions!

FANFIC - 110, which isn’t everything I have written, but what I still feel ok showing people.

What’re your first and second most common work ratings?
Teen And Up Audiences (44)
General Audiences (40)
Fancy that- I go around thinking I write mostly explicit stuff, but clearly that is not true!

What’s your most common archive warning?
Well, “No Archive Warnings Apply” is most common with 89 fics. But the most common “real” warning is Rape/Non-Con (15).

Least common?
Graphic Depictions Of Violence (3)

Do you consider yourself an adventurous writer?
No. I feel I have a passable grip on a few things and rarely stray.

How many stories have you made in each pairing category?
F/M (71)
Gen (29)
F/F (6)
M/M (5)
Multi (3)

Is this more accidental, or do you have preferences?
I prefer het and gen. I’ve never given it a throughout analysis, but partly, I think, because I usually identify with female characters and same-sex pairings don’t turn me on.

What are your top 4 fandoms by numbers?
Doctor Who (32)
Peter Pan - J. M. Barrie (17)
Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling (8)
Versailles (TV 2015) (8)

Are you still active in any of them, and do you tend to migrate a lot?
Peter Pan was my first fandom and all but one of those fics were written more than 10 years ago. I did visit again last year, but I don’t consider myself active in it. I never really considered myself active in Harry Potter, and the last three I have written are actually remixes. But I’m still active in Doctor Who and Versailles. I’ve always had multiple fandoms though, and about 12 of the fandoms I’ve written for only have one fic.

What are your top 4 relationship tags?
Wendy Darling/James Hook, (7) [Peter Pan]
The Master (Doctor Who)/River Song (7) [Doctor Who] Though most of the Masters and Missy, not only one of them.
Fabien Marchal/Sophie de Clermont (7) [Versailles]
Vanessa Ives/Sir Malcolm Murray (3) [Penny Dreadful]

Does this match how you feel about the characters, or are you puzzled?
Mostly unpuzzled. Wendy/Captain Hook was the first ship I wrote, so even if I haven’t written it for more than a decade, it’s still not so odd it’s there. The Master/River Song pops up from time to time- it’s an ongoing series where Rivers meets the Master on various stages of their timeline, and they are not always romantically involved. Fabien/Sophie has been my main OTP for the last few years, so not strange either. But though I vastly enjoyed Penny Dreadful and vaguely shipped Sir Malcolm/Vanessa I’ve never considered them a pairing I wrote much for. Well, 3 fics aren’t much. I’m not much of an OTPer- I ship wildly instead.

What are your top 2 most used additional tags, and your bottom 2?
Humor (13)
Dark (12)
and
Mind Games (5)
Unresolved Sexual Tension (5)

What would happen if you combined all 4 of these into a fic?
I think I could easily write a fic with the tags dark, mind games and UST, but I don’t think I could fit in humor there...

How many WIPs do you have currently running on AO3? Any you don’t plan on finishing?
I have 3. The End of the Story (Versailles) I’m currently working on, and it’s mostly done; I’m just stuck at the beginning of my current chapter. I plan to finish this one soon. Mary's Tale (Sleppy Hollow 1999)is complete in my mind and I really want to finish it. But I started to write this in 2006, and my English is so much better now. I feel that I need to edit the previous chapters before adding new ones. But I do want to finish it. Dudley’s Cousin (Harry Potter) I’m dithering about. I don’t really feel the love for it anymore, but it’s also one of my most popular fics (go figure), so I feel an obligation to finish it. Currently, I’m going back and forth about doing that or remove it altogether.

I also have two series who are incomplete, but A Little Less Than Kin (Doctor Who) is my Master/River stories, and the fics stand alone and it doesn’t matter much is a new fic comes, or not. They don’t have any particular order either- or rather they have two particular chronological orders depending if you read it from the master’s timeline or from River’s. So a new fic, if/when it comes, will most likely plop down somewhere in the middle for both of them.

Your Heart’s Desire is a bit trickier. It’s Dracula/The Historian fanfic, or rather fics with Dracula- they don’t really tie in with any book, and I never intended to make a series. I wrote one, and then years later got an idea for a sequel, and I realised I wanted to make it a trilogy. But the idea is taking it’s long good time to mature. And at this point, I feel I need to edit the two first stories first as well, both for language and to add a few things to tie them all better together.

Usually, retrospects take place at the end of the year. But at that point, Yuletide isn’t yet revealed, and those fics are, technically, written before the end of the year, though they are revealed after. So I do my retrospect by the end of November, instead.

Since December 2017 I have posted 9 fics, 8 of those finished, in 7 fandoms: The Borgias, Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Ivanhoe, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Peter Pan and Versailles.

The Borgias: Homeward (Cesare Borgia/Micheletto Corella, Lucrezia Borgia & Micheletto Corella)

Doctor Who: Nothing Interesting Ever Happens in Perivale (Sarah Jane Smith, Ainley!Master, Third Doctor, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart )

Harry Potter: Soaring High (The Flying Lessons Remix (Sirius Black/Remus Lupin)

Ivanhoe: A Gift For Her Heart) (Brian de Bois-Guibert/Rebecca of York)

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell: A Conversations In the Yellow Drawing Room (Emma Pole/John Childermass)

Wedding Nerves (Arabella Strange/Jonathan Strange)

Peter Pan: The Devourer (Captain Hook)

Versailles: Remembrance (Fabien Marchal/Sophie de Clermont)

The End of the Story (Fabien Marchal/Sophie de Clermont) WIP

Four fics were multi-chapters. My most popular fic, by far, was Remembrance with most hits, kudos and comments of all my new fics. But even if I haven’t written much, I’m rather pleased with what I have written. I’m especially pleased with Nothing Interesting Ever Happens in Perivale (It’s always fun to write the Master), A Conversation of the Yellow Drawing Room (Because Emma is an awesome heroine) and A Gift For Her Heart, mostly because I have wanted to write an Ivanhoe-fic for years.

Five of these were written for fix exchanges, and one of those was a remix. I did Yuletide, Chocolate Box, and Remix Revival. I opted out of Night of Fic Mountain and Darkest Night because they both took place when I had very little energy to write, but also because I didn’t find any pårompts but my own interesting. I had planned to write treats, but there was not a single request with sparked my interest. As for gift exchanges for 2019, I have already not signed up for Yuletide, though I am writing a few treats. I will definitely do Chocolate Box, and probably Remix Revival, though I will not offer Harry Potter anymore. I know the canon very well, but I’m not very amused by it anymore. Then we’ll see if I sign up for anything else. I do wish there were a fic exchange solely for Classic Doctor Who.

Apart from Yuletide treats and a few exchanges I don’t have any particular plans for next year. I want to finish The End of the Story, and also edit a few old fics- especially Mary’s Tale which I really want to finish, but needs to be edited first. I also have a rather long fic rumbling in my mind, but I’m not sure I’ll write it down. It takes place before WWI, mainly in Egypt and focuses on Delgado!Master and eventually Third Doctor. But there will be no Doctor/Master slash and there will be original characters, and my Delgado!Master is not nice at all, so it’s not a fic which will appeal. I’ll write it down if I feel a massive urge to not forget it.

Gakked from [profile] flo_nejla, because I can never resist a fandom-meme.

Do you have a word-count goal for 2018?
No. I never care for how many words I write.

Will you participate in any fandom exchanges or fic challenges, etc.?
Certainly. I’m doing Chocolate Box right now, and I’m sure I will do Remix Revival, The Darkest Night and Yuletide. Possibly Night On Fic Mountain too, but I will be rather busy when it comes around, so I’m not sure.

Do you anticipate writing for a new fandom in 2018? Which one?
I never anticipate that. I see or read something and inspiration strike, or I don’t.

Do you think you’ll stop writing for a fandom in 2018? Which one?
Not really.

Which WIP is first on your list to complete this year? Will you post a snippet?
A Doctor Who-fic called Nothing Interesting Ever Happens in Perivale . And the snippet is a bit of conversation between the Master and Sarah Jane:

The tea seemed to render the Master more companionable, because he suddenly surprised her with a question.

“Why do you keep a robot dog in your cleaning cupboard?”

“It’s my dog. I turn him off when I leave home because he isn’t functioning properly. But he is quite fun- you should have turned him on.”

“I see. The laser beam in his nose is still fully functional, I gather.”

“Oh yes, it works perfectly,” Sarah Jane said brightly and the Master snorted and relapsed into silence.

Which yet-to-be-started fic is first on your list?
The last part of my vampire-trilogy. But I need to finish editing the two first parts first.

Will you change anything about the way you interact with other writers?
I doubt that.

Is there a story idea in your mental vault that you’ve never been brave enough to try writing? Is 2018 the year?
Oh yes, but I doubt they will ever get written. Most of the are pretty much self-indulgent fantasies and/or too similar to fics already written.

Short term goals… what do you hope to complete this week or in January?
My gift-fic for The Chocolate Box.

Will you keep a record of all the fics you write and/or post this year?
No need to as I post everything at AO3, so it’s easy to check there.

Would you like to try any new fanfic genres or tropes in 2018?
Not really.

Will you change anything about the way you edit or rewrite in 2018?
Not really. On the whole I wish I had more of my fics beta-read, but I feel very self-conscious asking for one, and mostly only do it for gift-fics.

Aside from fanfic, are there any other fan works you’d like to try creating? Fanart, or fanvids, gifsets, or podfic?
I have ideas for fanart, but it’s unlikely I will ever do any.

Have you ever lost large chunks of your work in the past, due to not backing up your work? Will you change your methods in 2018?
Yes. Nowadays I write them in Google Doc and crosspost between my journal, AO3 and Fanfiction.net.

Do you foresee any personal or professional obstacles in 2018, that would keep you from creating fanworks?
Nope.

Do you have that one fanfic that you wrote a ton for, ages ago, but never posted? Will this be the year, come hell or high water, that it WILL get finished and posted?
No. Only one I wrote a ton for and posted, but never finished. I don’t know what to do with it, actually. I still like it, I know what is going to happen, but I started writing it 12 years ago, and I feel my writing has improved a lot since then. So if I’m to finish it, I will need to re-write the previous chapters too.

Do you typically answer all comments/reviews individually? Do you plan to change the way you interact with your readers this year?
Yes. And no.

Do you typically post multi-chapters as you write, or finish it all and then start posting? Would you like to change your posting method?
I post as I write, but I usually have the whole story mapped out in my head, and know where it will end.

Would you consider non-fandom writing events, like NaNoWriMo or writing contests?
No.

Any plans to work on original fiction this year?
Well, as mentioned above I plan to finish my vampire-trilogy. It’s only fanfic in the sense every story with Dracula can be considered fanfic, even if it owes inspiration from The Historian.

Yuletiding

Got properly flabbergasted for getting my Yuletide assignment so soon. I got a very good letter, but also a bit outside my comfort zone. But I have half an idea already, and hopefully I can make something good out of it. I’ve also noticed a letter with a request for a fandom I didn’t sign up to write, but got an idea for as soon as I saw it. So I think i can pretty safely say there will be at least one Treat. But I wonder when they will open up the Request summary at AO3. Some people only put there prompts on AO#, and some who do write letter doesn’t post about them in the letters post, so I always find the Request summary the best place to look Treat-ees. I also noticed that all my fandom request has got offers, which I didn’t expect- especially the pretty obscure offer of Elizabeth of the Garret Theatre. Weee!

And I’ve no less than two super nice comment on My Only Love, which completely made my day.
scripsi: (Default)
The Yuletide tagset is open! My nominations all got through, so now I have loads of fandoms to choose from.

Obviously my own nominations:
Gwendolyn Courtney - Elizabeth of the Garrett Theatre
H. P. Lovecraft - The Case of Charles Dexter Ward
Elizabeth Kostova - The Historian

But then I have to narrow these five down to three:
4. The Mummy Series
5. The Borgias
6. Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency
7. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
8. Deadwood

The Mummy series is pretty given as I considered nomming those myself, but the rest will be tricky to decide on. Versailles was nominated, but not the characters I’m interested in, so that one falls away, at least.

There are also plenty of fandoms nominated I have written in; The Mummy, Penny Dreadful, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and Peter Pan, even if I don’t know if I want to write in all those this year. There are also a few I haven’t written in, but can imagine doing so for, so I predict no problems in that area.

Apart from that I went down with autumn’s first case of bronchitis on Sunday, and feel very much under the weather. Tomorrow I need to get my act together when it comes to The Darkest Night-fic if I’m to have it done my the 30th. I have felt much too sick to sit in front of a computer up until today. Very annoying.
scripsi: (Default)
And suddenly Yuletide is almost upon us. How did that happen? Last year I nominated H. P Lovecraft’s The Case of Charles Dexter Ward with the characters Joseph Curwen, Eliza Tillinghast and Ezra Weeden. Because I have a hankering for knowing more about Eliza and her marriage to Curwen, and I think I’m going to nominate that one again.

And I’ll definitely nominate Elizabeth of the Garrett Theatre by Gwendoline Courtney, with the characters Alison, Elizabeth, Nigel and Nan, again.

But then I don’t know. My third last year was Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe with the characters Brian de Bois-Guilbert and Rebecca of York, but I don’t really feel the love for that this year. I’ve been thinking of Versailles and Elizabeth Kostova’s The Historian. The Mummy is also an option, though it is usually nominated anyway.

I need at least 100 words more on my Remix-fic, but I feel confident I will be able to add that tomorrow, when my brain has stopped being mush from writing on it today… And I have until september 10, so it shouldn’t be a problem to have it finished by then.
scripsi: (Default)
I’m in a good place writing wise right now. Which, in part, has to do with feeling a little fragile. I’ve always found writing good for the soul. And I’m stretching myself a bit, which is nice. I wrote that little ghost story which is the first piece of original fiction I’ve written in years. And I started a new versailles-fic. I never intended to write a series, but somehow it became one. And it’s interesting to write a love-story, because it’s something I only did for the first time last year. And it’s also interesting to try to make a relationship which is extremely unequal to begin with into something which isn’t, without losing the characters. It’s also great fun in writing a female protagonist with her own sexual agenda, because that is something I find rather lacking in fanfic. Especially in a BDSM context. And from a purely selfish standpoint it’s really nice to write something people actually comments on. Which, when I think about it, probably has more to do of me for once writing in both a semi-popular fandom, and a popular pairing. Or rather, a pairing a lot of people say they love, but basically only I write. So the fics would probably get attention no matter what.

I plan to sign up to The Darkest Night, but it’s a while yet- nominations are open to July 23. Remix Me seems to have withered and died, but there is a new Remix challenge rising; Remix Revival. I’ve already signed up, and there is plenty of time to mull it over if you are uncertain, as sign-ups close on July 30.

Cut for Doctor Who blather, with spoilers on the new one. )

Writing

I have been on a good writing roll lately, for some reason, but it’s very nice. I finished my fic for Chocolate Box, and I feel I need to concentrate on my WIP’s for a while. I have five:

•A Bewildered Heart (Versailles): Lots written, but in bits and pieces. I know what is going to happen though.

•Nothing Interesting Ever Happens in Perivale (Doctor Who): Mostly written down, too, but needs to be tied together.

•Professor Keller (Doctor Who): I actually updated this recently after a year and I only have the last chapter left now.

•Mary’s Tale (Sleepy Hollow, movie): I really like this fic and I know what will happen, so I don’t know why I don’t work on it. Possibly because there are a few things in the earlier chapters that needs to be re-written.

•Dudley’s Cousin (Harry Potter): Probably the most popular WIP I have ever had. And really, most if it is actually already written…

Having written it down I now see that I have the stories all thought out in my head for all of them. Let’s pledge that I won’t start any new fics during February but only write on my WIP’s. I won’t aim too high, though; I’ll aim to finish two.
scripsi: (Default)
It must be the weather, because I suddenly get another very long review, on one of my Dracula stories. This time only positive, so that was very nice. And then I noticed it came from adultfanfiction.com. I stopped posting there years ago because I find the site hard to navigate and haven't got a review from in it years. I have removed most of my fics and had completely forgotten I had only posted one chapter of Sophie there. And now I'm suddenly begged to update. So I did post the second chapter with a note saying that the complete story is on AO3.

How do you feel about fanfic and sequels? A couple of months ago i wrote a Versailles-fic; Show Me. I knew from the start how I wanted it to end, and though it’s a fairly open ending, I feel it’s an ending. I hadn’t planned to write more. But now the story won’t leave me alone and more have been written. Even if it takes place some time after the first fic, it’s still the same story, not a new plot with the same characters. But I’m not sure if I should post the newstuff as new chapters or as a sequel. I’m not overfond of sequels myself, but I read them if I have liked the first story. What would you prefer? A sequel or new chapters, even if the “old” fic has been labelled finished?

I know I’ve already done a fanfic meme, but I think they are fun to do, for my sake, even if no one else is interested. :)

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, fewer than you thought, or about what you predicted?
Less. But if you compare with the several year long writing lull I had before late 2014, I still wrote a lot. :)

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2016?
Quite a few new fandom. Versailles, pairing Fabien/Claudine and Fabien/Sophie. Agent Carter. pairing Peggy/Jarvis/Ana. Once Upon A Time in Wonderland, pairing Ana/Knave of Hearts and Ana/Jafar. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, pairing Arabella/Flora and Arabella/Childermass. And though I can’t tell you which fandoms yet, my treats for Yuletide are in new fandoms too. In older fandoms I have paired Fifth Doctor/Clara (Doctor Who) and Evy/Rick and Evy/Ardeth Bay (The Mummy).

I surprised myself with writing several love stories which, even if angsty, ultimately ended on a happy note.

What's your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest?
Probably my Agent Carter-fic, Requesting Comfort. And a short gen-fic for Doctor Who: Merry Christmas Master.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.
By kudos; Darkness and Light (Versailles.
By bookmarks; Ghosts (The Mummy.

Story most under appreciated by the universe?
Professor Keller (Doctor Who). I get why it isn't popular, it’s darkfic with the dreaded thing called original character. So it has few readers, but the little feedback I have got has been very positive and I think it’s a good story. Provided you like angst and is prepared to believe an OC isn’t automatically a Mary Sue. :)

Story that could have been better?
All of them? I can always see the flaws in my fics after a while. But The Substitute Teacher (Doctor Who) was written for a gift exchange and I ran out of time. It’s not a bad story, but in the middle it could have benefitted to have a paragraph or two to tie it together better.

Sexiest story?
I’ve written a lot less smut this year, but Show Me (Versailles.

Most fun story?
Merry Christmas Master.

Story with single sweetest moment?
Requesting Comfort

Hardest story to write?
Professor Keller

Easiest story to write?
Ghosts

Total words this year: 52476

Do any of you have recs when it comes to free text editing tools online? I’ve used ProWritingAid for some time, but now find they have limited their free content up to a point it isn’t worth using.

I always run my fics through online editing, even if I have a beta. I know they don’t catch everything, but they usually hone in on those stupid mistakes a non-native speaker of English are prone to do. I want my English to be as good as possible and now I feel deprived!

I’m still really under the weather, though I am better. I spend my days in an armchair and read, write and watch DVD’s. I’m starting to feel mightily bored by inactivity.

Usually the end of the year look back takes place at the end of the year. But at that point Yuletide isn’t yet revealed, and those fics are, technically, written before the end of the year, though they are revealed after. So I think I will do my retrospect in the early December, instead. As you can see.

So, since December 2015 I have posted 16 finished fics and 1 WIP in 9 fandoms:

In 2015 I wrote 33 fics and extensively rewrote 3 old ones, so I have been less productive this year. On the other hand I feel my writing has improved and the quality of the fics are better. I’m particularly pleased with my two Versailles-fic and Ghosts. I also still like Professor Keller a lot and I really need to finish it. Thematically I have written love stories with happy endings, which I’ve never done before. Even if most of them are pretty angsty, one way or another. I still like darkfics, but I have written less of it. As for gen and ship, I have written 7 gen fics, 8 M/F, 1 M/M, 1 F/F and 1 M/F/F. My Doctor Who-kick has clearly waned, even if I still love it, and I’m sure I will write more fic in that fandom. But I have always been a multi-fandom fangirl, and I don’t think that will change. I have participated in several fic exchanges, Yuletide, Chocolate Box, Rare Pair Fest, The Darkest Night, Fandom Stocking, Remix Me and Fandom Gift Box.

So, plans for next year? Well, obviously finishing Professor Keller. I also have two other WIP’s I really ought to do something about. I also have another Doctor Who-fic which is almost finished featuring Ainley!Master, Sarah Jane, the Brig and the Third Doctor. I have a half-finished Labyrinth-fic ‘d like to finish too, and a Versailles-fic; a sequel to Show Me. And, I just remember, half a Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell-fic I really enjoyed writing, but then forgot about when I had a bit too much on my plate. I enjoy doing fic-exchanges, but I felt I overdid it a little this year. I’ll definitely do Yuletide, Rare Pair Fest and The Darkest Night, and probably Chocolate Box and Remix Me.

On writing

Oct. 22nd, 2016 02:18 pm
scripsi: (adult)
I’ve started on my Yuletide fic and have managed a couple of hundred words and a synopsis over the rest. And quite by chance I read a Yuletide letter about a fandom I know, but has never considered writing in. Suddenly I had a fully formed idea for a treat and a synopsis and 300 words down on that one too. Ooops.

So, with revising and writing and still wanting to update here, I have formed a PLAN. I will write 400 words on my main Yuletide fic ever day. And when I have done that, then I can write the same amount for a blog post. And after that, I can write 400 words on a Treat, and then circle back to my main Yuletide fic. Which means I will probably post less here, but on the other hand I will get a lot of other writing done. I hope to write at least two Treats, hopefully more and perhaps a couple of drabbles, so if I’m scarce here, you know what I’m doing. :D

Argh! I’m, almost done with my Versailles-fic. I just need a few sentences to connect two parts of the fic, and those sentences doesn’t behave. Very annoying. I have grappled with it most of the day, and now plan to sleep on it. If I’m lucky I wake up with an idea.

I’ve decided to try to concentrate on some of my other WIP’s until Yuletide start up. I won’t be able to finish them all, but perhaps one more.

I’ve been keeping an eye of the requests on Yuletide and there are plenty I can consider writing something for. Last year I managed to write a Treat, but I had two other writing commitments during December. This year I will concentrate on Yuletide and try to write more Treats. After finishing my main gift-fic, of course. But it was a nice fluffy feeling writing Treats.
