This summer I participated in Fandom Giftbox 2016. I kind of forgot about it because there were several months until the reveal, so I was pleasantly surprised when I received two lovely fics.

Title: Threat Assessment
Author: keerawa
Fandom: The Vorkosigan Saga
Length: 1580 words
Rating: General audience
Warnings: None stated
Characters/pairing: Simon Illyan, Aral Vorkosigan, Piotr Vorkosigan
Summary: In the aftermath of the Escobaran invasion, an honorable man spirals toward self-destruction while a not-so-honorable one conspires to save him.

Why I rec it: Simon Illyan is one of my favourite character in the Vorkosigan books and I thoroughly enjoyed getting a glimpse of his view of Aral and Cordelia in Shards of Honor. And I love the hint that Piotr Vorkosigan might, just possibly might, had something to do with why Cordelia ended up on Barrayar.

I slept four hours tonight and isn’t functioning very well today. And as my talking meme question for today need some thinking and my brain is on hold at the moment, I’ll answer tomorrow. Instead I’m going to resurrect my Rec-a-fic Sunday. If you want to see previous recs, you’ll find a link in the sticky post.

Title: Inheritance
Author: rabidsamfan
Fandom: Little Red Riding Hood
Length: 100 words
Rating: General audience
Warnings: None stated, but the theme is dark
Characters/pairing: Little Red Riding Hood
Summary: None stated
Why I rec it: A hundred perfect words that gives the fairy tale a rather dark epilogue. Go read it, it will take you five minutes tops and I don’t think you will regret it.

I have managed to post every day of May, just as I had decided to. Even if it was just a music video some days. I don’t really plan to keep it up. I’ll still try to post fairly often, but I preer not to have a “must” as that has a tendency to become more stressful than fun.

Title: Kill Me Romantically
Author: lindest
Fandom: Doctor Who
Genre Angst words, Character Study, Slash, Het
Length: 2323
Rating: Adult
Warnings: Explicit sex, reference to non-con
Characters/pairing: The Fifth Doctor/Peri Brown/The Master (Ainley)
Summary: The Master knows Peri better than the Doctor does.
Why I rec it: Apart from the sex, which is well-written and rather hot, what I really liked about this fic was the “otherness” of the Time Lords comparing to Peri’s human mind. Love and hate has no words in Gallifreyan in this fic and, as a consequence, good and bad doesn’t exactly work as usual either. The central character here is the Master who understands both the Doctor and Peri and I think he is rather wonderfully described. The author calls this a PWP but I don’t agree- there are elements here that will stay with you long after reading.

Today I ruined myself on tea. Ever tried Kusmi tea? It’s expensive but the quality is wonderful. It isn’t sold everywhere and I often buy it online, which I find a bit of a hassle. So I have been all run out, but I was a bit early when I was a to meet a friend today and made a small detour to kill time. And found that they sell Kusmi tea in a shop just a block from where I usually pass. Yay! So now I have bought Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Green the with jasmine and Prince Vladimir, which is a scented black tea and I’m SO happy my salary is due tomorrow.

So this post of brought to you with a steaming cup of Prince Vladimir.

Title:Sarn Invictus
Author:icarus_chained
Fandom: Doctor Who
Genre Gen
Length: 2323
Rating: General Audience
Warnings: None
Characters/pairing: The Master (Delgado), the Master (Ainley)
Summary: To escape immolation on Sarn (Planet of Fire), the Master casts himself temporarily back down his own timestream, and has a brief and enlightening conversation with his past self before it's safe to rejoin the present.
Why I rec it: I gave the prompt “Classic Who, the Master comparing notes with himself” for the Obscure & British Commentfest and this one was one of the answering fics. (The other one, The Spirit of Vengeance by irishvampre13 is also excellent). Sarn Invictus is all I could ever hope for, it’s truly great. Both Master’s are spot on, they have their own distinct voices, but at the same time they are both the Master and both react to himself very much in character. Coinsidently it also gives a (for the show) plausible explanation to how the Master could survive Planet of Fire despite, you know, dying.

Also, both Delgado and Ainley at the same time- my little fangirl heart swoons happily at the very thought of it.

I found this fic through [livejournal.com profile] lost_spook who recced it at genplosion at Dreamwidth, and I found it so good I had to rec it as well. I was reared on British television, British humor always work in Sweden. I can’t fathom why Doctor Who never made it here, but Monty Python, The Young Ones, Not the Nine o’Clock News, red Dwarf and a number of other series did. And Blackadder, of course. There is actually such a huge fanbase in Sweden than when it was decided to make a play out of Blackadder Goes Forth it premiered in Sweden. I’m not sure it has even reached Great Britain yet. (The reasoning was; If it’s good, it will break in Sweden as they love the show so much, if it flops it won’t be such a financial bo-bo because, Sweden.) So I love the show and I especially love ELizabethan Blackadder. Rowan Atkinson actually manage to look hot- must be the beard and the earing and everything is just brilliant. So it this Doctor Who/Blackadder crossover.

Title: Just Impediment
Author:Doyle
Fandom: Doctor Who, Blackadder
Genre Gen, humor
Length: 4734
Rating: General Audience
Warnings: None
Characters/pairing: Tenth Doctor, Edmund Blackadder, Queenie, Baldrick, Percy, Melchett
Summary: Queen Elizabeth I is marrying a Mr William Shakespeare (no relation) and there's a mysterious blue box in the alley outside Mrs Miggins' pie shop; Edmund Blackadder is on the case.
Why I rec it: This story was written before The Day of the Doctor, so it explains why Elizabeth I didn’t like the Doctor in a way that is no longer canon. But it doesn’t matter! It’s a hilarious romp and still, within the frame of the series, actually totally logic. And though I kind of anticipated the ending, it was still brilliant. The author nails everyone’s character and I’m left with a hopeless longing after this being made into a television special.

Title: Home?
Author: vj5 ([livejournal.com profile] lost_spook)
Fandom: Doctor Who
Genre ´Gen, humor
Length: 7938
Rating: General
Warnings: None
Characters/pairing: Donna Noble, Tenth Doctor, Third Doctor, Mike Yates, Jo Grant, Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, The Master (Delgado), John Benton
Summary: Donna asks a reasonable question and the Doctor bends the laws of Time and Space to answer it. Which obviously involves two Doctors, UNIT, the Master and a nasty mess in the space/time continuum..
Why I rec it: I love this story! The various interactions between the characters are hilarious and their voices spot on. I must confess to a special fondness for The Brig and Donna interacting with each other. I think they would have got along wonderfully if they ever had had a chance to meet. But there are several delightful scenes here, the Doctors bickering with each other, Jo realising that Ten is the Doctor, the Doctors joining forces to annoy the Master and so on.

Title: A Still More Terrible Night Awaits Us
Author: Lyricwritesprose
Fandom: Doctor Who, Lovecraft
Genre Character Study, Crossover, General, Horror, Vignette
Length: 1278
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Psychological horror
Characters/pairing: The Master(Ainley), H. P. Lovecraft, Ace McShane, the Seventh Doctor
Summary: The distinction between cosmic horror and cosmic wonder is at least partly one's point of view. Lovecraft crossover.
Why I rec it: A boy is trapped inside the Master’s TARDIS and rescued by the Doctor. A happy story? No, not at all. I don’t think you have to have watched Doctor Who to enjoy it either, if you have read Lovecraft. And you don’t have to have read Lovecraft to appreciate this story, even if the author writes this fic in the same manner as Lovecraft and as pastiche it is very well done. But it also a rather chilling horror story, very haunting.

Title: The Practice of Barrayaran Sex
Author: Philomyta
Fandom: Vorkosigan Saga
Length: 16215 words
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: Sex
Characters/pairing: Aral Vorkosiga/Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan, Piotr Vorkosigan
Summary: Aral and Cordelia's wedding. And wedding night.
Why I rec it: I have just re--read the Vorkosiga Saga and this fic is a perfect missing scene, or rather scenes between the ending of Cordelia's Honor and Barrayar. The voices of the characters are just right and it is all just lovely about two people who has not faired that well in love before and have some sexual baggage to boot.

Title: Nowhere Special - I Always Wanted To Go There
Author: mizface
Fandom: Blazing Saddles
Genre Humor
Length: 1221 words
Rating: General audience
Warnings: None stated
Characters/pairing: Sheriff Bart/Jim “The Waco Kid”
Summary: My little coda to the film.
Why I rec it: I stumbled over this fic quite by chance. Though I think Blazing Saddles is hilarious, it isn’t a fandom I can say I had ever considered. And I’m not much of a slash reader. But this one is just lovely. It’s very funny and the author really get Bart and Jim’s voices, but it is also rather heartbreaking about love that is finally spoken out aloud.

Title: The Master’s Companion
Author: JulisCaesar
Fandom: Doctor Who
Genre Humor
Length: 2103 words
Rating: General audience
Warnings: None stated
Characters/pairing: The Fifth Doctor, The Master (Ainley)
Summary: For some reason, there is an elephant in the Master's TARDIS. He would like to register his displeasure with this.
Why I rec it: I laughed myself silly when I read this one. The elephant is very elephant-like, which the notes explains and the Master tries very hard to not enjoy having an elephant. Or an elephant having him, perhaps. The elephant reminds me of an elephant called Mini in one of Diana Wynne Jones books, an animal capable of walking between worlds- clearly a relative to the Master’s companion.

Characters/pairing: The Third Doctor, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw, Jack Harkness, Donna Noble, the Tenth Doctor, The Master (Delgado), River Song, the TARDIS
Summary: In which Torchwood completely fail to locate the Doctor while he's pretty much on their doorstep.
Why I rec it: A couple of short scenes with various characters that are described spot on and why they want to find, or hide, the Doctor, and of course, the Doctor himself. I laughed out loud several times while reading it.
