Oh, yes, catharsis is an important element (and probably frequently even more so in the writing than the reading).

I'm actually quite wary of what I read as well. I may prefer darker stuff, but I'm also really sensitive to how it is handled. Nothing makes me quit reading as fast as if I feel a sensitive subject is badly handled. I want a reason for why it's there, not just in thrown in gratiously, if that makes any sense. And I definitly tend to read things from authors I know have written well before. Likewise I may read things I wouldn't normally go for, if I have had a previous good experience. :)
DW really is a perfect fandom and I still wonder why I didn't start earlier. I have been a big fan of the show since 2003, or so. But perhaps it needed to mature. :)
