Answers to the fic meme
Feb. 9th, 2015 09:48 pmI hope no one mind that I answer the fic-meme in a post instead of individual answer.
a_phoenixdragon asked What is your favorite type of fiction to write - and do you have a character preference? and
flowsoffire asked Mmmm, I don't know your writing very well yet, so… how did you come to writing and what are the things you prefer to write? (Anything from genre, style, length, fandoms or characters, just tell me what you like!
velvetwhip asked What drew you to Peter Pan?
Questions that overlap a bit so I answer them mixed together.
I started writing fanfiction in 2004 and it was pretty much straight out of the blue. I saw a still from Peter Pan featuring Jason Isaacs as Captain Hook and suddenly the urge to write a story was upon me. I loved the book as a child and I was always more interested in Captain Hook than Peter Pan, but I can’t say why this movie still made me want to write, it just did. Almost all of my Peter Pan-fics has had a therapeutic meaning for me. They have helped me deal with a sexual assault which is why many of them are very violent and contain rape. I have noticed that even if I often write NC now, I don’t feel the need to write about violence anymore. I have dealt with what happened to me but I am sure I wouldn’t have that as well as I hadn’t start writing.
Still, my favorite kind of fic to write is darkfics. I do write funnier stuff at times but never pure fluff. Even my funnier stories often deal with subjects like loneliness or bullying, on some level. I’m no completely sure to why I prefer writing angst, but I do feel a need for it. I don’t mind confessing that many of my stories are written purely for the smut-factor and with that I mean my kind of smut. I identify myself as a submissive masochist sexually and I don’t mind confessing that some of my stories are what I myself enjoy to read. Instant self-gratification. I know it probably sound very strange to some of you, but what I fear and what excites me overlap, so some of my fics that contain NC are more about fantasies than dealing with sexual trauma. They are usually more BDSM oriented, though they forego the bit about mutual consent which is so important when you do it in real life and they are more recent.
I like to write bad guys, but I like them better with ambiguous moral rather than pitch-black evil. Flawed villains, perhaps, characters that isn’t good, but may have an explanation behind their action, or some good traits. I prefer flawed heroes over perfect ones as well, which is one of the reasons I love Doctor Who, whose hero certainly do dark things at times, but who’s opposite, the Master, sometimes do somewhat good things. I have also noted that most of my heroines aren’t rescued, they rescue themselves, or they learn to do their best in less than perfect situations. Something I feel that most of us do, to a larger or smaller degree.
On the whole I prefer to write one-shots or stories with less than five chapters. I simply don’t feel confident that I can provide a storyline that would be interesting for a multi-chapter story. I fandom hop to a certain degree, there are several fandoms I have only written one fic in and then nothing. I don’t consciously choose fandoms, I follow an idea and happily write wherever inspiration strikes. At the moment I’m very much in love with the Doctor Who fandom, but I have actually been a huge fan of the show for many years and still I never considered writing in it until this autumn.
