Music Monday
Mar. 23rd, 2020 09:28 pmA Swedish song today; sorry. But it has a lovely melody, so I think it’s worth listening to anyway. Ola Magnell was a singer/songwriter who was one of my father’s favourites when I was a small kid. I don’t like everything my father listened to, but Magnell’s music has followed me my whole life, and his texts have often felt relevant to me. He died about a month ago, and since then I have listened a bit more to his music, and this song is one I have returned to again and again. It’s impossible to translate it as all the poetry gets lost, but it’s about rejecting a world which with all its stress and pollutions is slowly destroying you, and finding yourself and your own strengths. The first words of the refrain go something like;
Throw your sword and raise your eyes/Before your soul gets devoured/In a duel with the King of Clubs/And a poisoned little world
Throw your sword and raise your eyes/Before your soul gets devoured/In a duel with the King of Clubs/And a poisoned little world
