[livejournal.com profile] sallymn asked What are your favourite costumes in fantasy TV/film?

When it comes to the movies, I say Sleepy Hollow. I know it is set in 1799, but the costumes are largely 1770’s, with Lady Van Tassel’s clothes being pure fantasy. And Ichabod Crane’s mother wear a gown which is 1720’s, or so. Also, ghosts and witches. And it looks fantastic! So many lovely details and the costumes really enhances the story.

But yay for corect spiral lacing on the stays!

For TV-series, well, for all it’s faults, Game of Thrones have great costumes. I love the attention they have given it. And I love how fashion changes depending on where they are. Sansa is a prime example on how circumstances affect the way her clothes looks. There is also a lot of thought in colour schemes and decorations. For a more in depth look, go here.

I also found the costumes in Emerald City impressive. Fantasy is almost always set in some kind of pseudo-medieval period, but Oz is a rather modern fantasy country, and the show mixes a multitude of styles, picking up the distinctive colours from the books without following it to slavish details.

The East Witch doesn’t have ruby slippers, but ruby gauntlets.

Glinda wears white, while Mistress West is in black, while Ozma, wears a neutral blueish grey.

The Cowardly Lion is not a lion, but an uniform.

Princess Langvidere doesn’t change her heads, but her masks.

And if you have another question, feel free to ask.

Give me a topic to talk about and I promise to try and post about it sometime in the near future.

Awesome post, thanks!

I too love the costumes in Game of Thrones, and how the different kingdoms' cultures and climates are shown through the outfits. Honestly, better than how they're described in the books, with the glaring exception of every tight or revealing outfit Dany wears :side eye:

Clearly, I made a big mistake not watching Emerald City. I had no idea it was like that. Very impressive.

Is that Miranda Richardson in Sleepy Hollow? I adore her!
