My overall reaction onThe Husband’s of Wedding Song, delighted.
Not without some reservations though. When one bring back a character in a show, it usually feels like the writer had thought either “I have this awesome idea and I desperately need X to make it click.” or “I want to bring back X- how can I make this happen?” Sadly, this episode feels like the latter. The whole plot with the headless cyborg king with a diamond in his head was mostly just tiresome. I felt too much time was spent with River mock-fawning over her husband and the head screaming. I also thought it took a bit too long for River to realise the Doctor was the Doctor.
But I still loved so much about this episode! So much! I loved:
# The chemistry between Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston. I have wanted to see them together since I heard Capaldi got the role and I have not disappointed.
# The fact that Alex Kingston is over 40 and is still allowed to be sassy and sexy.
# “Carolers will be criticised.”
# The TARDIS trying to cheer the Doctor up with giving him holographic antler.
# The Doctor and River laughing together in the snow.
# How worried the Doctor got when he thought that perhaps River’s didn’t love him.
# His reaction to her callousness. Doctor, dear, she is not a really nice woman, and you should know it. Reminded me of when she shot people and said to Amy to not tell the Doctor she did- clearly she is concerned to show her best side to him and she knows some aspects of her disturbs him.
# Codename: “Damsel”. That’s hilarious- I think the Doctor usually thinks of himself as the white knight. But really, when river shows up she is usually there to help the Doctor out.
# The fact that River has borrowed the TARDIS before. I want to know more about that!
# The Doctor saying his version of “It’s bigger on the inside”. I think he must have rehearsed that in years!
# River having a drink cabinet in the TARDIS the Doctor didn’t know about.
#River dragging the Doctor along by the hand while he complains that this isn’t normally something that happens to him.
# The Oscar Wilde reference from The Importance of Being Earnest.
# River’s whole speech about how much she loved the Doctor and that he doesn’t love her. And the Doctor standing behind her and you could just see him thinking “I though she knew I loved her- should I have told her too?”. And she realising he is there and him saying “Hello sweetie.” At that point I was sniffling.
# River’s escape plan.
# River hasn’t just had husband’s, but at least two wifes! Loved that! And I shall believe one of them is Missy. So there! Also, I now crave one of those fundraising shorties with River, the Doctor and Stephen Fry snarking.
# The whole ending bit with them living happily for a night which lasted 24 years. I think he finally told her he loved her. And I’m sure
# How this ties in with Silence In the Library. Matt Smith wasn’t cast as the Doctor yet when River meets Ten, but it always irked me that she thinks looks so young, when Eleven looked much younger. But if the last time she saw him was with him as Twelve, well, then the line fits.
# Also, even if this is working backwards I love to think that when we see River as a ghost on Trenzalore, she knew what the Doctor don’t- that this isn’t their last goodbye for him.
# Still, this may be their last night together, but there are days too...
