Spoilers as per usual, especially for Outlander which has spoilers even for episodes not aired yet.
Someone on fandomsecrets on DW had re-watched The Mummy and wanted Evie/Imhotep fanfic and that made me want to rewatch the movie too, so I did. (And hey, someone recced my little Mummy-fic- wasn’t that nice?). I really disliked The Mummy Returns, mostly because I don’t like precocious kids in action movies and also because they upended most of the basic mythology. I did like The Mummy a lot, though, so it’s always a bit nerve-racking to rewatch something after ten plus years.
I saw the original The Mummy with Boris karloff as a kid and remember I found it both scary and a bit moving. The Mummy isn’t nice, but he is also a man in love and much of his actions stems from a desire to re-unite with his loved one. It’s pretty effective storytelling and seems to have been adopted by most modern Dracula re-tellings where Mina suddenly is the reincarnation of Dracula’s lost love. But I digress. The Mummy from 1999 keep to the original storyline ín as much as he has been cursed for loving the wrong woman and much of his energy is spent to try to get his lost love back. The rest he spends killing people. Oh, and he has to kill the beautiful woman who is to be the vessel for his loved one too. Of course.
But I still liked it on re-watch. The cast is much larger than the original Evelyn the Heroine is adorably played by Rachel Weisz and she is a librarian. That’s always a plus in my book. She has a never-do-well brother played by John Hannah- also a plus and they are helped by Brendan Fraser who is cute and seems to take it all in good fun. There is the token Arabic minor character who ye standard caricature of an Arab, but there is also a trio of American adventures who are very much caricatures of Americans too, so I guess that weight it up. They all die horribly. Also, I would argue that the movies most dashing hero is not Brendan Fraser but Oded Fehr whose character is Egyptian too and who is not killed off, even if he doesn’t get the girl. And though I agree that it’s high time to stop casting white actor for roles who are not, I still love Arnold Vosloo’s mummy. He is the movies villain, of course and is pretty evil, but you can also tell that he is the hero in his movie.
And without asking for it I got an idea for a Mummy-fic. When am I supposed to write that one? I just noticed that the nominations for
rarepairfest came and went without me realising it and that was stupid of me because that could have been a golden opportunity for me to request some Versailles-fic. Oh well. But Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and Penny Dreadful are nominated and, actually, The Mummy too. So now I’m debating if I should join in, of just write a few treats. It is very nice to get a gift-fic, but on the other hand I will have a deadline to cope with.
Writing goes fairly well right now- I’m halfway through the last chapter on my Versailles-fic and I have ideas for two other fics in that fandom. I went through my fic-file and I realise I have a lot in there that need some attention. For Doctor Who I have two chapters left to revise of Professor Keller and I also have two unposted fics that are almost complete. Then I have two old WIP, one from Sleepy Hollow and one Harry Potter. And, unposted, an almost finished Labyrinth-fic and one Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. And synopsis for a Penny Dreadful-fic and the above mentioned one from The Mummy.
Which gives me three posted WIP’s. Four unposted WIP’s. And two fic-synopsis. No, make that four, I actually have two detailed synopsis for Peter Pan. I keep telling myself I’m done with that fandom, but from time to time a weird little story about Hook and the Crocodile beckons at me.
I’ve watched the finale of Orphan Black, which didn’t feel that much of a finale really, not compared to last year. But I gather there will be one more, final, season and I guess the producers knew that so they didn't have to try to wrap it up. I found this season satisfying, but on a more low-key note. I look forward to more!
Two episodes left of Penny Dreadful and I both can’t wait and don’t want it to end already. It really is the TV-show of my dreams when it comes to acting, sets, mythology and costumes. With that said I can say that I have been less keen on Ethan's American Adventures. We have learned that his father was awful and that he has been awful and his Native American father is pretty awful too. And so is his English one as well, but we already knew Sir Malcolm isn’t a very nice man. Oh, and Hecate died. I liked Hecate.
But I’ve loved Vanessa’s storyline. Her relationship with Dr. Seward and the background story of how she and the Creature was friends before he died. Meeting dr. Sweets and falling in love and then finding out he is Dracula. I’ve loved all of that! I think dr. Sweets is one of the best Dracula’s i have ever seen and I both want him to get his just desert and not disappear from the show after just one season.
I wonder if the Creature has reached the end of his storyline and will be written out? He has constantly evolved, but now he has found his family and they have accepted him and I wouldn’t mind if he get his happily-ever-after now.
The Lily/Dorian/Victor/Henry-plot is interesting and I wonder where they will go with it. It’s clear the show disapproves of Victor’s troubles with consent and it is not OK to force Lily to be “the perfect woman”. But it is also clear that Lily can’t go on killing off half the human race just because they are men. Dorian is still an enigma. I wasn’t surprised that he has liaison with victor and Henry because Lily had become boring, but I have no idea where he will go from this point. And Henry? We all know he is Mr hyde, but so far we haven’t met him. Hendy seemed quite adept in having him suppressed, so I wonder what will have to happen to make him emerge.
I’ve no idea if there is to be a season four, but I feel pretty sure a new season will be all about Egypt. I hated having Ferdinand Lyle shipped of there, but, of course, he wouldn’t be an expert on Dracula and I do like Catriona. Then I noticed he was going to see Imhotep’s tomb, and, well, Imhotep is the Mummy’s name. So I predict we will have an Egyptian-centred season with the Mummy and that prediction of Vanessa being a reincarnation of an Egyptian goddess.
Outlander is still meh-ish and soon both Tobias Menzies and Graham McTavish characters will be dead and I don’t know if I will feel motivated to continue watching it. On the other hand there will be a couple of new characters, so perhaps I’ll give it a go just to see if it picks up again.
I like this season of Game of Thrones a lot more than the previous. A lot less gratuitous sex and Sansa getting to grill Littlefinger over handing her over to Ramsey. But please, can’t Jamie get some character evolvement now? He did such a nice character growth and then he basically went back to square one. My hopes are that when his nephew/son invariably gets killed, Jamie will be a loose canon. I hope he picks up his army and go and join Brienne then.
Husband and I are re-watching Lie To Me. Well, I am, he hasn’t seen it before. I really wish there had been more than three seasons! I adore Tim Roth and he is pretty great as an expert of micro-expressions and lies. I also like that the mýsteries doesn’t always centre around a murder.
