I seem to be stuck with my insomnia. I'm so exhausted I fall asleep as soon as I go to bed, sleep for two hours and then wake up only to not fall asleep again until an hour or so before I have to get up. I'm so tired right now that I feel silly, so tomorrow I have a doctor's appointment to get sleeping pills. I don't like to eat them, but now I have tried all my tricks and nothing helps. I know from experience that if I take sleeping pills for two or three nights my body get used to sleeping again and I can stop taking them.
So I'm too tired to write, read or sew, but the kid and I have reached The Two Doctors, another DW I haven't seen before. Two and, of my giddy aunt, Jamie! But I feel sorry for Peri. Not only does she have to run around the universe in even more unsuitable clothes than Tegan, she also have to speak that horrble fake-American and get abducted at least once every episode. I know she is meant to be eye-candy, but this is verging on silly. Well, DW isn't a stranger to the "Bathe her and bring her to me-trope", Barbara, for example has to suffer it from time to time. But poor Peri, every single alien she meets seem to lust after her, even slug-aliens who must have the strangest sexual fetish to lust after a human. It's a pity because I actually like her, she is terrified most of the time, but soldiers on, she doesn't abadined the Doctor even after Six behaves really badly toward her and very often she is right when the Doctor isn't. And she has a good deal of empathy and kindness. And as Nicole Bryant is only slightly older than me, I can actually see my own teenage me in her. I had that hairstyle and several of her clothes are similar to what I wore in 1984, though not as short or low-cut. And I actually lived in pastel coloured cour shoes- but I didn't have to run around like mad on alien planets with them. Pity the show felt it had to sex her up all the time instead of thrusting her to be appealing as a character.

Date: 2015-05-09 01:52 am (UTC)And, of course, this is the serial with the quote "Look at the size of that thing!" "Yes, Jamie, it is a big one..." which became the tag line of the Doctor Who kink comm on LJ. :D I giggled so much when Two burst out with that.
Peri puts up with a lot, man. I did enjoy all the escapes and recaptures of the various Doctors, though I'm not at all sure I'm down with that whole plot about uplifting the aliens and then them regressing. It seemed vaguely skeevy on some level.

Date: 2015-05-09 08:09 am (UTC)Both wear high heels most of them time which is just silly, especially considering how much running around they do with the Doctor. And take tegan's White outfit she wears in several episodes. I had a elastic top like that and I can tell you; it's really easy to get a wardrobe malfunction with them. A hostile alien grabs you and the accidental flashing of breast in probably unavoidable. But Tegan is at least not constantly treated as a sex object in the way that Peri does.
It's not that I mind "Bathe her and bring her to me" from time to time, but when it happens over and over. Even Ainley!Master seem to enjoy leering at her almost as much as he enjoys leering at the Doctor. Nicola Bryant is gorgeous but it feels like the show doesn't trust the Viewers to see that without huge blinking Arrows saying "Look, she is sexy! Have you got that? Peri is supposed to be SEXY!"
And I feel the show do this with the Doctor as well. Not as sexy, but as strange. The question marks which annoys me so much- why would the Doctor want to wear it, really? And adopting it four regenerations in a row when nothing else carries over. Or Six's awful coat which is a huge blinking Arrow for the vieweer so they can understand that he is odd, instead of trusting that people will pick it up on their own.
Personally I think Six would have read a lot better in somber clothes as the actor wanted. I can get that the show vetoed black clothes as he would have been too similar to the Master, but one can be somber in otehr colours as well. (I noticied that now when the Doctor is wearing black, Missy returns in Purple) :)
Sorry for the wordiness, but I have been thinking a lot about it.

Date: 2015-05-09 07:16 am (UTC)Exactly! She and Tegan really get the short stick- so much potential and most just squandered. One of the things that is better with New Who!

Date: 2015-05-14 01:43 pm (UTC)It's a shame indeed when characters get sexed up to an exaggerated extent… Too bad for her :/

Date: 2015-05-14 02:12 pm (UTC)There is much to love with 80's DW, but not the blatant sexification of Peri. We just watched the first episode Timelash and the villain of the week just did the "Bathe her and bring her to me". The Kid and I groaned- we have a standing bet if Peri will be abducted in the first or second episode...
