Take a peek behind the curtain: beyond the bright lights of the carnival midway are the mods keeping the rides running and the queue's orderly. Today we want to feature the mods so you know who you'll be hearing from throughout the month and give them each a little shoutout. \o/

Hi! I'm Abyss & am excited to let the sunshine in with everyone here this July :3 Young-adult, queer mess, but most of all, a fandom brained person how adores seeing ppl be excited about their fannish things. Hope that there'll be lots of sunshine this year!

[personal profile] endlesstwanted:
Hi, I'm Chase — your typical nerd who started writing fanfic in a gym while skipping PE practice and never quite escaped. I collect cinematic traumas like they're Infinity Stones, ship rarepairs like it’s a paid job, and attempt to fix canon like I’m duct-taping the bumper cars mid-collision. Also, very hyped to be part of Sunshine Revival this year! See you in the comments (while I possibly discover my next hyperfixation) ^^

[personal profile] florianschild:
Hi, you can call me Flori! Summer is my favorite season BY FAR so I'm incredibly excited for this fun way to combine my love of summer with my love of Dreamwidth. <3 As far as my own journal goes, I mainly post about books I read and lately I've been trying to analyze why I love angsty pretty boys so much. No conclusions have yet been reached. :D

[personal profile] muscle_wizard:
I'm Toki o/ A long time hobby writer, lover of fic, food, and queer media. Journal sites have always been my fandom home base and I'm happy to be apart of this challenge. Looking forward to spreading joy and sunshine through the power of comments <3_<3

Hi, I'm tellshannon815, writer and occasional icon maker (especially for the less often ficced characters) for many years now. Looking forward to being part of the revival of the challenge this year, to hearing all about everyone's fandoms and maybe discovering some new (what do you mean, I have too many fandoms already?), and to getting to interact with new people!

Thank you mods!

Stay tuned for tomorrow's friending meme...

Had some cardamom cinnamon tea. My mother called me yesterday with some bad news, my sister's husband had to have heart surgery, I didn't even know he had any heart problems. This cancelled their vacation, I hope he's going to be OK, I absolutely love him.

       - I wrote
       - I did some planning and/or outlining
       - I did research and/or canon review
       - I edited

       - I posted today!
       - I'm taking a break
       - I did something else that I'll talk about in a comment

Sunday Discussion:  It's a new writing week, and the last week of the current month.  How are you doing so far with meeting writing goals for the month?

This book was recommended to me by a former colleague who loves mysteries. She was reading the author's newest book, but she said this was the book to start with since I had never read anything by Anthony Horowitz.

I thought about quitting for the entire first half of the book, tbh, but I trust her so I kept going. It was such a pastiche - Poirot meets any number of imitators, set in the post-war time period but with few period details and even fewer period attitudes. It really just had old tech/no modern tech to set in it the post-war era. Having read Lavender House recently, which is set a few years later, it didn't hit the mark when it came to implying the setting.

A bit of a spoiler )

I'm much more invested in it now. I do think it was a risk to take 213 pages to get to this point, but I am curious to find out what the hell is going on. It remains to be seen whether I will pick up any other books by Horowitz. Regardless, I will definitely finish it now (probably tonight) and we will see if it was worth it!

So I was keeping an eye on the new super-mouse for when it would be in stock. It was estimated to be in stock by the 30th, but that date has been moving around quite a bit, so I was checking it daily.

Two days ago, it was in stock. They had 25 of them. I ordered one immediately. (Parcel tracking info says I can expect it tomorrow.)

Because I was curious, I checked it again today. All gone. Not just 'out of stock, expecting more at this date' gone. It's gone!

Good thing I jumped on it as soon as I had the opportunity, because clearly it wasn't just me.

In other quite closely related news, the new computer is ready for me to move into, except for the tiny detail of my monitor being old and it turned out that an adapter was necessary because the cables are obsolete. Luckily Husband was able to source one as click and collect which he has just gone to pick up, and it's a very cheap item as well. Delayed the process by a few hours, though.

I do have plans to upgrade the monitor as well, but I don't want to do so yet. Come winter when we will likely begin the process of redecorating my room, there is also going to be some changes to the furniture, which means I might have room for a 2 monitor situation. I see little need to start replacing it until we know whether this is in fact the case, because the only thing wrong with the current one is a tendency to sometimes turn itself off completely instead of remaining on standby. This is mysterious and slightly inconvenient, but hardly a huge problem. Especially considering it's been in daily use for 15 years.

The set and costume designers heard about blue-and-orange color schemes and just decided to run with it. I swear, they bought out everything blue in the store. Even the post-its are blue! And what isn't blue or teal is orange, or tan, or gold.

I received what I'm going to take as a fine compliment today: someone I'd met all of four hours earlier said I sounded like I wrote professionally for magazines and other publications, simply from how I talked.

I've decided it's up there with multiple people - completely independently, several years apart, none of them knowing each other - telling me I speak in real life the way I talk online.

Academia: Staying Afloat

You are the right person to do what you do, know what you know, study what you’re going to study. You do it.

You are a lifeboat.

You are not the passenger being rescued from a shipwreck. You are the rescuer. Your skills, your knowledge, your experience reside in you. You have pulled them from the cold ocean where cruel and careless captains have set them adrift.

You are a lifeboat

Art pieces double as carbon-free air conditioning, inspired by ancient civilizations

Researchers at Virginia Tech have developed a 3D-printed evaporative cooling system made of hollow clay columns that can cool the surrounding air by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

The columns are filled with water and sand, and when warm air passes through the porous clay exterior, water stored in the sand columns evaporates, which in turn, cools the air that passes through

84 Charing Cross Road, by Helene Hanff

A sweet epistolatory memoir consisting of the letters written by a woman in New York City with extremely specific tastes (mostly classic nonfiction) and the English bookseller whose books she buys. Their correspondence continues over 20 years, from the 1940s to the 1960s. It's an enjoyable read but I think it became a ginormous bestseller largely because it hit some kind of cultural zeitgeist when it came out.

I Survived the Great Molasses Flood, by Lauren Tarshis

The graphic novel version! I read this after DNFing the supposedly definitive book on the event, Dark Flood, due to the author making all sorts of unsourced claims while bragging about all the research he did. The point at which I returned the book to Ingram with extreme prejudice was when he claimed that no one had ever written about the flood before him except for children's books where it was depicted as a delightful fairyland where children danced around snacking on candy. WHAT CHILDREN'S BOOKS ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

The heroine of I Survived the Great Molasses Flood is an immigrant from Italy whose family was decimated in a flood over there. A water flood. It's got a nice storyline about the immigrant experience. The molasses flood is not depicted as a delightful fairyland because I suspect no one has ever done that. It also provides the intriguing context that the molasses was not used for sweetening food, but was going to be converted into sugar alcohol to be used, among other things, for making bombs!

My favorite horrifying detail was that when the giant molasses vat started expanding, screws popped out so fast that they acted as shrapnel. I also enjoyed the SPLOOSH! SPLAT! GRRRRMMMMM! sound effects.

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle, by Stuart Turton

A very unusual murder mystery/historical/fantasy/??? about a guy who wakes up with amnesia in someone else's body. He quickly learns that he is being body-switched every time he falls asleep, into the bodies of assorted people present at a party where Evelyn Hardcastle was murdered. He needs to solve the mystery, or else.

This premise gets even more complicated from then on; it's not just a mystery who killed Evelyn Hardcastle, but why he's being bodyswapped, and who other mysterious people are. It's technically adept and entertaining. Everything does have an explanation, and a fairly interesting and weird one - which makes sense, as it's a weird book.
