Which I thought really nice, so therefore I pimp it here.

I forgot to mention The Book of Negroes in yesterday’s post, a mini-series I practically devoured. Do see it! It’s the story about a African girl, Aminata, who is kidnapped and sold as a slave in the 1760’s. Basically it is a story about an intelligent and resourceful woman who throughout her life is forced, or at least told, what to do by white men. Personally I cheered in the last episode when she is told that she can’t write her own life story because “It has got to be just right” and she says “Exactly,” The narrative isn’t really revolutionary, I predicted most of the events in the last episode, but it was still gripping and I sobbed quite happily. Outstanding acting, especially from Aunjanue Ellis and Shailyn Pierre-Dixon who played adult and child Aminata.

One thing annoyed me, but it will only be annoying if you, like me, have a thing for fashion history and know what people wore and not wore in the 18th century. I suspect that they didn’t have any budget to speak of as most men wore one of two really bad wigs. And most of the women wore clothes in the style of the 1850’s without the big skirts, which several times made me forget that it was supposed to take place in the late 18th century and that it was actually the Independence war that was going on and not the Civil war. Apart from the end which takes place in 1802 when Aminata suddenly wore 1770’s style clothing and another woman an 1840’s style dress instead of the Regency style that was actually fashionable than. Irked me something awful, but if you have a more hazy knowledge of what people wore, you will likely not be bothered. Whoever did the costumes had a great sense of colour anyway, choosing shades that really complimented Aminata.

Gave up on True Detectives though. I loved the first season, even with the one-dimensional female characters and all those men who thought they had a right to describe female pain because it worked for the story. And I really, really loved the nudge toward Lovecraft and a feeling that there might have been something supernatural going on. But we were promised a new season with women taking the first place and I just haven’t seen it yet. We have an angry female cop with daddy issues (how fresh and new that feels-not), a starlet who offers sex to get away with a speeding ticket and a few other women who basically looks pretty. And lots and lots of men. Two male cops (again) with issues, one of them extremely nasty. I have a hard time watching parents abusing and bullying their kids as it is, but when the character in question doesn’t even realise what he is doing, well, no. Just no.

I didn't watch it but pretty much everyone talked about how bad this season of True Detective was. Makes me sad because they had a pretty solid cast, apparently they were wasted. :/

Nothing wrong with the actors, it was the script which totally failed. :/
