Fandom meme answers
Aug. 20th, 2015 04:37 pmHere are my fandom meme answers from this post. Doctor Who, Buffy, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean and Peter Pan.
Doctor Who
How I entered that fandom
I didn’t grow up with DW as it was never aired in Sweden back then, but I had a friend who was mad about the show and always nagged me that I should watch it. So around 2003, or so, I gave in and watched what he had. It was a bit spotty, about half of One and Two’s episodes, almost everything with Three, Four and Five, about half of Six and just a few of Seven’s and no Eight at all. I liked the show from the start, but I fell in love with it with Three. Then it was quite natural to continue with New Who when it started and I loved it too. Last year my kid wanted to watch Classic Who and this time I made an effort to actually see every available episode. We are on Seven now. But even if I have loved the show for more than a decade I somehow never thought about looking for an online community and read fanfic until a year ago. Don’t ask me why I never thought about it before.
Favorite character
I should have said the Doctor on the last meme too, because he is, after all, essential for the show and I love him. I like all the Doctors, even if I like some a bit more. But I think all of them bring something to the show and I wouldn’t want to be without any of them. Apart from the Doctor I like Delgado!Master the best.
Least favorite character
That would be Adric. I don’t hate him, but he gets whiny teenager down a bit too well and I just want to shake him.
OTP(s)
I don’t really do OTP, but it is kind of hard not to ship the Doctor/Master. And I say that as someone who are a lot more inclined toward het than slash.
Pairing that everyone likes but I don’t get
I can live with most pairings in fanfics if they are well written, but I don’t get why Ten/Rose is so hugely popular in fanfics. I liked it just fine in the show, but the pairing doesn’t really interest me. I seem to be a clear minority here, though.
Favorite thing about the fandom
I think DW is just about a perfect show to write/read fanfic in. You can get any time period and decades worth of Doctors and companions to choose from. And the show itself mixes drama, humor, tragedy, adventure and romance, so any genre works really well. It really have something for everybody.
The thing I most dislike about the fandom
Nothing, really. I’ve heard people saying that DW can be a nasty fandom, but I have never encountered anything like that. Everyone I have met have been very nice and friendly.
If there is something I would change from said game/show/movie/etc., what would it be?
There is always some things, isn’t it? I would like to see that last episode with Delgado!Master they never could make. I would have liked for Nyssa to have a better emotional story arc vis a vis the Master. I would have liked to see more of Turlough when he finally got into his own and I would have loved another season with both Five and Six, not to mention Donna. And I would have liked to see Six in other clothes. And more of River Song. So yes, there are definitely things I would have liked different.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
How I entered that fandom
I saw a few episodes here and there when it first aired and liked it even if I didn’t followed it, but then, in the early 2000’s a friend upgraded her VCRs to DVD and gave me all the seasons of Buffy and Angel. So I binge watched all the seasons. I still re-watch them every few years, or so.
Favorite character
Giles, followed by Spike and Willow.
Least favorite character
Kennedy and Warren. Thinking about it I say I dislike Warren the most- he is such a total creep.
OTP(s)
None, really, though I do like Giles/Willow.
Pairing that everyone likes but I don’t get
Don’t know. I never cared much for Buffy/Angel, but I know I’m not alone in that.
Favorite thing about the fandom
I like the humour and I like the idea of a supernatural world living alongside the normal one. And I like that this is a fandom with so many interesting female characters..
The thing I most dislike about the fandom
I can’t say that there are anything.
If there is something I would change from said game/show/movie/etc., what would it be?
I wouldn’t have killed off Anya and I would really have liked Spike not trying to rape Buffy. And I would very much have seen another season of Angel instead of getting the very compressed story arc in the last few episodes.
Harry Potter
How I entered that fandom
I started to read the books just after The Prisoner of Azkaban was published. liked the two first books, but the series clicked with the third one. Then I devoured the books as soon as they came and largely enjoyed the movies as well.
Favorite character
Luna Lovegood, both in the books and the movies. And I really loved Lucius Malfoy in the movies, because of Jason Isaacs. I adore Jason Isaacs.
Least favorite character
Peter Pettigrew.
OTP(s)
None here either.
Pairing that everyone likes but I don’t get
Hmm… Harry/Draco seems rather popular and I don’t get it because I find Draco such an unpleasant character.
Favorite thing about the fandom
I like the large gallery of characters and I enjoy the way Rowling's incorporate magic.
The thing I most dislike about the fandom
I can’t say that there are anything.
If there is something I would change from said game/show/movie/etc., what would it be?
I would have liked a few sympathetic Slytherin students..
Pirates of the Caribbean
How I entered that fandom
I have had an interest for pirate movies since I was a kid and I like Johnny Depp, so I knew I had to see it when the first posters emerged on my railway station.
Favorite character
Jack Sparrow and Norrington.
Least favorite character
Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan.
OTP(s)
None
Pairing that everyone likes but I don’t get
None, I think.
Favorite thing about the fandom
The visuals. A number or really competent actors. Pirates.
The thing I most dislike about the fandom
Elizabeth complaining over her stays drives me bonkers. A. It doesn’t matter if she was raised in the Caribbean, ladies of her class grew up in stays, period. B. Well-fitted stays makes you stiffer, but they aren’t actually painful to wear unless you tighten them too much. Which you kind of didn’t- tight-lacing has always been something very few indulged in. Though this isn’t perhaps a fandom complaint...
If there is something I would change from said game/show/movie/etc., what would it be?
Better scripts and less gimmicks would have made for vastly better moves. As it is now I feel the last movies has a lot of wasted potential.
Peter Pan
How I entered that fandom
I loved the book since I was five, but what triggered me to write fanfiction 8which I had never done before) was a still from the 2003 movie where Jason Isaacs as Captain Hook was looking menacing, brandishing his hook.
Favorite character
Captain Hook. I have always had a thing for pirates, as I mentioned above....
Least favorite character
Tinker Bell.
OTP(s)
None.
Pairing that everyone likes but I don’t get
Well, the most popular pairing is Peter Pan/Wendy Darling which I do get, but I don’t care for it.
Favorite thing about the fandom
Hmm, I’m not so sure it can be called a favourite, but this fandom had had a huge impact on me as writing fic for it gave me the chance to deal with a date rape when I was 18 which I had largely repressed. Writing allowed me to deal and get over it and also helped me to sort out my sexuality for me, for which I’m forever grateful. But this also mean that those fics are extremely dark with a lot of non-con and violence. I can’t say I actually like those fics now, but they were very necessary for me to write. Some, which I do like parts of, have been re-written and several have been pulled from the Net and a few I’m still very ambivalent if I will pull or not.
The thing I most dislike about the fandom
I don’t know. I have a feeling it attract a lot of Mary Sue’s, but I can’t say that is absolutely true.
If there is something I would change from said game/show/movie/etc., what would it be?
I can’t say that anything has ever struck me.

Date: 2015-08-20 03:23 pm (UTC)Ah yes Warren, recognisably mundane evil. What I liked about Buffy is that they tried to do different things with the baddies each season and not have interchangeable big bads.
I don't mind Adric too much but then I've been brainwashed by a fan (yes, he has them!). It does annoy me they didn't make more of the fact The Master had stolen Nyssa's Dad's face & they should have shown her being more bothered by it. It would do my head in.

Date: 2015-08-20 03:32 pm (UTC)I don't actively dislike Adric, I just like him the least. :)
Yes, they touch upon it a little bit in Logopolis and then it's just gone. So strange and I would have loved forher to have some kind of closure. She also loses her whole race, very much like the Doctor do in NewWho. But for Nyssa it barely registers and for the Doctor it is an arc stretching over seasons...

Date: 2015-08-20 03:48 pm (UTC)Giles! Never considered Giles/Willow, but it sounds like it could be fun.
Jason Isaacs is perfection and his Lucius is awesome. I love movie!Lucius. And Luna is awesome too, though my favorites are Minerva and Neville. And I don't get Harry/Draco either mostly because I think it elevates Draco's importance. Draco wasn't Harry's equal, I feel. Draco/Harry makes it out like Draco is Harry's enemy whereas I saw him more in the bully role.
I love the 2003 Peter Pan movie, and Jason's Hook was what got me first interested too.
I'm so sorry you went through all of that, but I'm glad that you were able to work through it with the help of fics. Fandom really can be a place to work through things. I worked through some things I experienced with the help of some really dark fics.

Date: 2015-08-20 04:59 pm (UTC)In the show I felt Nine was very newly regenerated and traumatized so he sort of imprinted himself on Rose, like a small chick. :) And they solved it rather neatly with making a human Doctor for Rose. But I still don't get why it's so popular a pairing. Perhaps because Rose is a bot of a Everywoman who it is easy to identify with, especially if you are a young fan? And perhaps because it's the most "normal" relationship the Doctor has ever had. I suppose that could be interesting, even if I don't find it so.
Yes, Lucius in the books isn't nearly as interesting as Lucius in the movies, IMO, and it's all Isaacs doing. Oh, I love Minerva and Neville too! And the twins! And I see Draco that way as well- as a bully. I will never get "Draco in leatherpants". :)
I Think Jason Isaacs is awesome whatever he do, even if the Movie isn't much to speak of.
Thank you! Yes, Writing can be very good for the soul. I'm glad you found it helpful as well!

Date: 2015-08-20 03:51 pm (UTC)I just love to see how people get into fandoms. I'm also glad you haven't had any bad experiences in the Doctor Who fandom. I've seen a bit of Moffat hate, but other than that, I always have good experiences.

Date: 2015-08-20 05:06 pm (UTC)I do try to stay clear of fandom fights- I don't get them at all. There are certainly genres and pairings I find un-interesting, like Ten/Rose, but I don't hate them and I understand people enjoy different things. It's so easy to just don't read what you don't like, after all. :)
I don't always get Moffat and I can find things I think he could have handled better, but that is a far cry from hate. :)

Date: 2015-08-20 05:49 pm (UTC)It is interesting to see how you got into fandoms.
Ten/Rose never interested me either but I'm pretty mild on shipping - I'm happy to ship my characters and everyone can ship who they want. With Doctor Who I actually don't ship that much. I prefer companions who are not in love with the Doctor. I think I loved Donna so much because of the solid friendship and her telling him clearly he is not her type. Doctor/Master is a good one, though.
I love Donna and River Song, and I do wish we had more time with them.
It's really cool that Peter Pan and fanfic helped you with such a dark time. Writing can be very cathartic.

Date: 2015-08-20 06:49 pm (UTC)I'm with you there. I may not get certain shippings, but I'm happy to let those who enjoy them, enjoy. I can ship Doctor/River, and I can enjoy a Doctor/companion fics at times, but I don't feel any need to write fics about it. The Master, on the other hand.. But I have Always been a sucker for a good villain. :)
I love Donna and River too and it would have been wonderful to seemore of them!
Yes, very cathartic! :)

I don't really get it, either. It's like Johnlock in BBC Sherlock - everyone just assume you ship it before you admit that you don't. I respect all opinions and preferences, but people do not even try to explain their fondness - even in fanfiction, you either "see it", or you don't.
I really like what you wrote about your favourite thing in Doctor Who fandom. I believe it's the same for the writers - they can do anything in their episodes and it doesn't matter if they are regular Doctor Who writers or it's their first script for the show, or if they've written drama or comedy or something else before. There are no boundaries.

Date: 2015-08-20 06:59 pm (UTC)I always think it's interesting to hear the why's of a fic. I love notes when the authour explain what s/he was thinking and I often do it myself.

Date: 2015-08-20 07:22 pm (UTC)I'm not a huge Ten/Rose fan either, though I didn't mind them in the show and wrote a bit of them for the angst potential. It's just not the most thrilling pairing in my book. Then again, I think we share a love for more complicated, angsty-entanglement pairings.
Nodding about the need for more variety amongst the Slytherins ;)

It's not hard, especially in Classic Who, it's impossible not to ship them.
I’ve heard people saying that DW can be a nasty fandom
I've never seen it get nasty in my corners either, but it does get pretty wanky and whiny and sometimes too negative for my liking in the main communities, but most of the Who fans I met are actually all pleasant and fun.
I would like to see that last episode with Delgado!Master they never could make. I would have liked for Nyssa to have a better emotional story arc vis a vis the Master. I would have liked to see more of Turlough when he finally got into his own and I would have loved another season with both Five and Six, not to mention Donna.
So much agreement! Nyssa could really have used a better arc, considering how her story started out and the Master's involvement in it and I started out not sure what to think/being a bit annoyed by Turlough, but then he came around and I was so sad to see him go. It would have been cool to see how a more mature Turlough interacts with the others.
And, yes, more Five, Six and more Donna would have been brilliant!
Ha, I came into Buffy fandom in a similar way to you. And, wow, yes, Warren is such a creep. He really is my least favourite character. I also wish Anya hadn't been killed off. She had come so far at that point. And nobody needed the Spike trying to rape Buffy thing, urgh.

Date: 2015-08-24 04:31 pm (UTC)Evidently I like flamboyant and sarcastic men... :D
Yeah, Three/Delgado!Master have a very, very special relationship. I Always get a strong feeling that the master tries to kill the Doctor/his friends/take over the Earth because he is in a sulk because the Doctor don't want to rule the world with him. :D
but it does get pretty wanky and whiny and sometimes too negative for my liking in the main communities
I have noticed that people on the FB-Group seem to complain more about the show and say what they hate, rather than what they love.
I can be critical of how things handl, but I have never felt that it makes me hate the show or any character.
I loved Turlough in The Planet of Fire. He gets all heroic and saves Peri, while still being himself and complain about it and then he bosses Five around. I think Five would have done better with just one or two companions and I think a bossy Turlough would have worked really well with timid Five.
