I got a comment on my first Top 5 post that it had made it into the top 25 posts on LJ, and when I went and looked it was number 6. It felt a bit odd and a bit too exposed. (It’s gone now, thankfull.) I have never tried to get popular posts, so I was very much surprised. I guess people are attracted to a Top 5 post just because lists are fun.

So on to them!

[livejournal.com profile] navaan

1. Donna. I really love her. She is smart and bright and a bit insecure, even if she grows a lot and sassy and with a clear moral compass. I really, really hate the way she was written out of the series and I still miss her.

2. Liz Shaw. As I said before I fell in love with DW with the Third Doctor and Liz is very likely part of that love. Probably because she’s the companion I’m most like personality wise and we are also the same type when it comes to looks. Caroline John was a lot prettier than I am though, and I’m not a red-head.

3. River Song. I love her disregard for rules and how she manages to spin the Doctor in circles so he get’s all dizzy. He’s not used to that, I’m sure. And she’s funny and deeply sad at the same time, which I love.

4. Sarah Jane Smith. The perpetual popular companion. I think it is because she really is Everywoman to a much higher degree than any other companion. She’s smart, but not super brainy. She’s pretty, but in a girl next door way, not stunningly beautiful. Actually, I think Elisabeth Sladen was stunningly beautiful in her middle ages, but as a young woman she was cute. But though she’s good-looking she dresses in a lot more practical way than most companions. I started school about the same time Sarah Jane was a companion and I remember my first teacher dressing like that. (One of the reasons I love 70’s Who so much is the intense nostalgia. My hipp Mum dressed exactly like Jo when I was a very small child.) And sarah Jane’s independent and brave and generally nice, so she’s very easy to like.

5. Why is the last one always the hardest? I love so many companions. So Nyssa, Jamie, Martha, Amy and Turlough always made it, but I’ll stick with Romana. Both of them. She has a proper character arc which is quite rare in old Who and I love that she sometimes can put the Doctor in his place. And she’s wonderfully snotty. I’d love to see her return one day and being a Time Lady that is probably a lot more likely than any other Classic companion.

1. Once More With Feeling (season 6). I’m not a huge musical fan, but I really love this episode.

2. Band Candy (season 3) It’s always fun when Ethan Rayne’s in town and seeing Giles being a rebellious teenager is hilarious.

3. Tabula Rasa (season 6). The ending of this episode breaks my heart, but I love how they find their true selves even when they can’t recall who they are.

4. The Body (season 5) I know, Buffy’s mother dies in it, but it’s emotionally such a powerful episode that I must include it, even if I rarely want to watch it.

5. Halloween (season 2) Ethan Rayne again. And Oz. Very much win, for me.

My favourites varies a bit, the newest ones are probably easiest to feel a lot for, but I have a few oldies as well. I tend to write rather dark stories and I love to write a good villain. The links goes to AO3, but they can be found here as well.

1. Professor Keller (Doctor Who; Delgado!Master). Partly because it’s new, but also because I feel I actually managed to convey the spiralling nightmare the main character find herself in. I put a lot of work in it and it’s unusual in having several chapter, most of what I write are one-shots. It’s always difficult to write original characters, but I think I made Alison and her husband believable and not Mary Sue-ish. They get their lives tangled up with the Master’s plans without any concept of who he actually is or what he is capable of. In short, a story about a pair of those people who were unfortunate to meet the Master when the Doctor or UNIT wasn’t around to save them. Rated for minor violence in two chapters and reference to dubious consent, but mostly just for the Master’s less than nice mind games.

“Rights are for those who take them.” The Professor spoke in a low voice, close to her ear. Despite his words he sounded very kind, caring even. “You, you are all like children here, unformed, thoughtless. You and your husband play with your shiny toys, but you have no purpose in life, no direction. You need someone who takes care of you. Someone to tell you what you should do.”

2. Clara (The Historian, Dracula). This and it's sequel Sophie are probably more stories than fanfics. The main antagonist is Dracula, who by now is such a part of modern lore that a number of books have been written about him. But it was Kostova’s The Historian which inspired me. A horror story about a librarian who is unfortunate enough to attract the attention of Dracula. Rated for an attempted assault and, well, vampires.

She sat behind her reference desk, its lamp a beacon where the visitors went for help and advice. Other small lights were lit at the tables strewn around the library, heads of all shapes and colours were dipped over books and papers. The sight made her smile. They were all here for a mutual goal, and she was there to help them achieve it. People who came in the evenings were different from those who came in the day. In the evenings the lonely people came. Those who had no family who wanted them home for dinner, nor friends eager for their company. The library was their friend instead, and Clara recognised them all, greeting them by name when they sought her out.

3. Solace (Doctor Who; Ainley!Master and Nyssa). I like it because I wanted to write about grief and dealing with it, but also because it annoys me that the very strange relation the Master and Nyssa must have, never was addressed in the show. Not a shippy fic, rated for mind games.

“I could be Tremas for you again. Would you want that, Nyssa?”

She could feel tears on her cheeks. “No. My father is dead.”

“Is he? Can he be truly gone when I am here to remember?”

4. A Little Less Than Kin (Doctor Who; River Song, Delgado!Master, AInley!Master, Missy). I guess I’m cheating a little now, because this isn’t a sole fic, but a series. I started, quite by chance, to write a Master/River Song fics where they meet and quite like each other and enjoyed myself enormously. Most of the fics lean on humor; their bantering are so much fun to write, but I think one can read just one here and there and enjoy it. Rating are mostly for all ages/teens but , Sliding Down the Razorblades of Life are rated for non-explicit sex and Building Character for spanking.

The Master watched her for a moment. River looked away and shifted a little. She looked unhappy, but also a little secretive and he was used to interpreting the smallest change of features and things didn’t really add up here.

“He is not really dead, is he?”

River grinned, suddenly sunny again. “Spoilers.”

“You seem to have an over fondness for that word. Tell me, did your husband ever found you a trifle aggravating?”

“Frequently.” River moved closer again, gripping the bars with her hands. “But let me ask you what you think. Do you think he is dead?"

5. Silence (Peter Pan; Captain Hook). It still creeps me out, despite being 10 years old. Captain Hook wins over Peter Pan and finds it’s not at all what he expected. A horror story above else, with reference to child murder.

He, the only man Barbecue had feared, what was he now? A slayer of children, as stuck on a nightmarish island, as he was before Pan died. It seemed that with the boy and his silly happy thoughts gone, everything in Neverland had started to decay. Everything grew mouldy. The silver goblet that Hook drank his wine from was tarnished black. The wine tasted stale, and however carefully his meal were prepared, the food had a faint taste of rot

Donna is my favorite. Granted I barely seen any old Who, but I adore her to pieces. She was just a grown woman and not an impressionable child. I hated how her story ended but at least she did get the family she wanted at the end. Her grandfather was one of my favorite companions too.

Once more with feeling is definitely the best episode for me too. Great Buffy list.

Oh yes, I adore Wilf too! And yes, Donna was a grown-up and she was never afraind to call the Doctor out if she tought he was wrong. And though he usully feel at lost and gets depressed after loosing a companion, loosing Donna almost made him loose Control completely. *This* close to going dark, I think. :)

I'm re-watching some Romana I at the moment and really enjoying her:)

'Once more with feeling' is so much fun. Someone taped the episode on to a cassette tape for me to listen to. 'The Body' is one of those excellent but not one to pull out for a casual watch eps.

Romana I is fun, gliding around in her completely impractical clothes (really, wearing white when you travel with the Doctor). I like Romana II as well, but wouldn't have minded more of I. :)

I agree, The Body really isn't one for casual viewing, but so well made, I Think.

Romana was nearly practical in 'Stones of Blood' (boiler suit, Burberry flat cap) but she couldn't find the right shoes!

Romana was nearly practical in 'Stones of Blood'

Indeed, almost. :D

I love it in her first (I Think) episode when she is wearing something White and not very practical and the Doctor chides her for it. Then it turns out he has brought her something warm to wear and it is a coat that matches what she is wearing.

Lol, who would have thought it? Nice coat: I wouldn't mind having it.

Me neither! Mind, I would get a spot on it after two minutes. Romana, I guess, just glares at the dirt and it slinks away in shame. :D

DONNA ;________;

I'm just going to assume that her brain and memories are quietly regenerating in a non-traumatic way as she goes about her awesome life.

I haven't gotten to Sarah Jane in Classic Who yet, but I love her appearances in New Who. I'm looking forward to meeting Liz and Romana and all the others <3

Yes, I hope Donna's brain does just that!

You have a lot of fun watching ahead of you! I look forward to hear of what you think of all of it! :)

I share your Ethan-love. In fact I've been giving him quite a big role in a fic, of late. He's such fun. Also, Silence is an extraordinary story.

Yes, if you ask me he should have continued to show up once every season and be chaotic. :D

Oh, I forgot Silence! How could I do that? I agree, it's a really great episode!

Top Fives are truly loved!! And you have some good ones. Though I can't blame you for being a little freaked out though!

Love your answers! Always so hard to pick - but you have some damned good picks here!

Ohh, wow!! I may have to read that last one!! And age is never a factor for good fic! Cannot wait to read it!

*HUGS*

Thanks!

I never strived to be popular, so yes, odd to suddenly get attention.

Silence is just about 900 words, or so, so it's a pretty read. I hope you will enjoy it, if you read it!
