So, Doctor Who finaled with Hell Bent. On the whole I must say that I found this season a lot better than the previous one, which had some great episodes, but felt somewhat disjointed. And though I liked Peter Capaldi from the get go, I feel he really grew into the Doctor this season.

We start what I didn’t quite like, because it’s not much. I feel the idea of someone who dies but then does not die, is sadly overused. We’ve had it twice this season. Also, the way things build up in a certain way only to turn out to be about something else- been done before. In this case it has been a lot of talk of finding Gallifrey again, only to find they’re not in the time lock anymore, but free, though stuck at the end of time and the big climax was saving Clara.

What I like; well, most of it. Despite feeling it was overused, I really did love the ending with Undead Clara and Immortal Me in a TARDIS shaped like a diner. (And olf TARDIS decor- woohoo!)

Once again it’s clear that the Doctor really, really can’t be alone. Last time he lost a companion in a traumatic way he became Time Lord Victorious, and even if it wasn’t mentioned, I feel that is what he became here (I don’t count Amy and Rory even if that was traumatic too, because they didn’t die and he had River with him.) In Hell Bent he really went into the deep end and his fixation on saving Clara was purely selfish. Clara was, as she told him in no uncertain ways, fine with her own death. The Doctor’s plan was to make her alive again and then, without her consent remove her memories of him (Like Donna again, actually). So his stubbornness in saving Clara had more to do with making himself feel better, not really doing the best thing for Clara. Because she would never, ever want to forget the Doctor. Well, she called him out on it. And though I still find it odd that they had to go through the whole “put the button and see”, I think it was really fitting it was the Doctor who forgot. Well, not totally, probably because he is a Time Lord, but he forgot the hurt and pain and can go on now. And Clara, in a way, finally bacem the Doctor, with her own TARDIS and all. And Me could to travel in space- though I would say her and Clara’s relationship will be more between equals than the Doctor has ever been with his companion. I think they will check out the Doctor from time to time to see how he is doing.

And even if I was annoyed with how they just breezed through the whole Gallifrey out ot the time lock, I like that this actually explains Missy. The Master must have regenerated back on Gallifrey when his body returned there along with Rassilon and the council. And then it would be easy peasy for her to steal a TARDIS as soon as Gallifrey got out. I hope we will get a better explanation to how eventually. And Gallifrey being at the end of time explains why the Doctor had to go through billions of years to get there, which irked me in the previous episode. Also, loved that the Doctor wore clothes that pointed toward One on Gallifrey.

I also liked how ordinary Gallifreyans clearly feels very different about the Doctor than the Council and that there is a distinct difference between classes on Gallifrey, something I don’t think NewWho has touched before. Loved the reference to “the boys”, which I take means the Doctor and the Master. I liked how the Doctor managed to get the soldiers to lay down their weapons just by not having a weapon. But I was very disappointed it wasn’t Timothy dalton who played Rassilon *pout* I wanted Timothy Dalton back again. and I had really hoped we would see Romana again. On the other hand, good for Master/Missy who must have succeeding offing Rassilon as he clearly has regenerated. liked the commander who regenerated and changed both sex and ethnicity. Opens up for a not-white Doctor, I suppose, which I would personally like. A bit annoyed that she regenerated with perfect makeup on. I liked that it was never revealed who the hybrid was, even if all the theories and one extra, got an airing. I’m Clara evidently snagged the sunglasses and the screwdriver is back again.

So all in all I really liked this episode and I look forward to see River Song again soon.

I’ve also, finally, watched season 26 of ClassicWho and now only have the movie left until I’ve see all the episodes of the Classics. I found both Ghost Light and the Curse of Fenric a bit odd. Really, really love Seven and Ace and their relationship. He can be a manipulative bastard at times, can’t he? I enjoyed Survival a lot, though it clearly suffered a bit from a low budget. According to the script writer. the Cheetah People originally jsy had yellow eyes, sharp teeth and faint spots, much like the Master has, but then could this masks instead which looked very fake. I’ve heard very good things about Ainley’s performance in the episode and I agree. He was rather low-key which made him a lot more menacing and he was really nasty, clearly killing people “just because” and for no practical reasons. Loved Ace relationship with Karra.

Overall, it has been a good season. I would love to see a Clara / Me mini series but i doubt that will ever happen.

The last series was very dysfunctional but this series was a lot calmer.

I thought the US diner TARDIS was quite JNT - the space coach from 'Delta and the Bannermen' could stop off there!

Two could be quite manipulative too, making out he didn't care for Jamie for baddie defeating reasons.

I also think this season was better than the last. It felt less like lots of thrown in ideas happening at 100m/ph and never thought through than the last few seasons, more thought out and trying to tell Doctor Who stories instead of knocking out the viewer with rapid pace. I loved Twelve from the very beginning, but this season was much better with grounding him in the stories and giving him room to be the Doctor instead of the "new" Doctor.

I agree that the dead person not dying is overused. Also the whole memory thing has been done over and over again now that I really wish we could get something less tired at some point.

Yes, that's what I felt too. :)

On the whole, I think the show would benefit from a new showrunner now.

I have so greatly enjoyed this season and the last three episodes where stellar in my humble opinion :D

I liked the difference between the reguar folk vs. the council too. I have not seen anything Who but new Who so there is a lot I do not know about what has been shown/what has happened before.

I'm looking forward to the x-mas special, making a thing of it with my niese :)

It's a rather wide gap in classes on Gallifrey and have been a source of some conflict. If I remember correctly, an ordinary Gallifreyan doesn't regenerate like a Time Lord can. NewWho hasn't exactly had any opportunity to talk about Gallifreyan classes, but hopefully we may see more of it now. I don't think we have seen the last of Rassilon- he has been a bit of a Time Lord über-baddie before. :)

It was a highly good season and a damned good ender, even if I am not happy with the Doctor's behavior. Clara handled it all better, really. Och...

No, not the doctor's most shining moment. But he isn't Always perfect, which is one of the things I like with the show. :)

*hugs*
