Fanfic meme, question 27 and 28
Mar. 7th, 2021 02:46 pm27. What’s the nicest comment you’ve ever received?
I’ve been writing fanfic for seventeen years, and have had many lovely comments. Right now I’m rather overwhelmed by the super nice comments I get for my latest fic; a The Queen’s Gambit fic called The Black King. I’m so used to operate in the obscure corners of fandom I always get a surprise when I actually manage to write something in a fandom that is a bit more a jour.
28. How well do you handle criticism when it comes to your writing?
I’ve actually had very little criticism, and on the whole, I think I handle it pretty well. It depends on the criticism. I’m not a native-speaker of English and if someone points out a grammatical error or using the wrong word I say thank you and edit accordingly. I’ve had a few comments from people who just didn’t like the style of my fics, and I shrug at those. We all have different tastes, and if someone doesn’t like what I write, well, it really isn’t my problem. I write what I enjoy and I know not everyone will enjoy them, and though it’s never exactly fun to hear it, it doesn’t bother me.
I’ve had some criticism about how I handled a plot element. Some of them have been about bits I already felt were weak, and sometimes I feel the reader had a different interpretation than I had. I don’t mind that kind of criticism either- at times it has led to some interesting discussions.
The worst was a person who read several of my Peter Pan-fic and went irate over the rating and subject matter. Now those fics are all rather dark, but they have also been rated accordingly, and the warnings clearly described not only in the notes and tags but in the summary as well. The person was also very upset over my interpretation of Captain Hook which was WRONG! Now I just don’t understand why you would read a fic containing things that disturb you, but those comments hit me when I was quite low, and I was rather upset when I received them. It made me remove some of my fics from AO3 too. Now I just find it comical- such silly behaviour.
All the questions.
