[livejournal.com profile] icecoldrain asked: Name one movie you absolutely hate and why you dislike it so much.

I can’t say that there is any movie I hate. If I don’t like something I simply stop watching it. I don’t much care for certain kind of movies, and avoid explicit violence and gore. As a rule I don’t enjoy horror movies (funnily enough as I like reading horror). The last movie I didn’t like that I still saw the whole of was Dagon a movie adaptation of Lovecraft’s The Shadow Over Innsmouth. Too much rape, too much blood and a general disregard of the source material.

It's more in how it's made, I think. I'm not keen on war Movies either, but have seen one or two I have liked. :)

I don't know that I have ever seen a good adaptation of a Lovecraft story.

I don't think I have seen any other adaptions, but I'm fully prepared to believe you!

Through the years, I have seen a few films but they really did not adhere to the story. And were just...awful.

Sometimes I think producers just buy titles and don't give a darn if the movie bears any relation to the source.

Oh yeah, there is often a big difference between horror novels and horror movies, especially when they're movie adaptations. Sometimes I wonder why they bother "adapting" a book to a movie when the movie clearly didn't use the source material. Like did they just want the title? lol.

Indeed. And though I can understand why you have to change things as what works for a novel may not work in a movie, but mostly I feel they make things just worse.

Resident Evil is one of those movies. They took a few things from the books/games and then created something that was just not Resident Evil at all. They tried adding characters and such later, but it was clearly an afterthought. While I did like the first one, it still baffles me that this was supposed to be an adaptation. idk why they couldn't have just made the movies without it being an "adaptation" lol. From what I've heard, the later games tried to be more like the movies. idk about the later books in the series though.

I didn't know there was a movie adaptation of "Shadow over Innsmouth". However, I would've stopped watching due to how far from the book they went. I did the same with True Blood, particularly after the 4th season (though I hated the third...fourth seem to redeem itself a bit imo)

I'm not a fan of horror movies either, particularly gore. However, Exorcist terrifies me the most

You haven't missed anything! They changed the location and made it contemporary. Instead of a single hero, there is two couples. A lot more blatant violence where Lovecraft is understated. The only thing that really worked was the old drunk which was pretty much left untouched. What could potentially have been interesting is what Lovecraft never alludes to, even if that must have been present- that people may not have very willing to mate with fish people. But the Movie was just gross there.
