What I am reading: Captain Vorpatril’s alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold.

Prudence by Gail Carriger.

What I have finished reading: Diplomatic Immunity by Lois McMaster Bujold. Miles and Ekaterin are on their way home from their honeymoon when Miles is called in on a diplomatic crisis in Quaddiespace. The Quaddies are genetically engineered humans, design to live in free fall. Instead of legs they have an extra set of arms. One of Bujold’s first books was Falling Free which is about the genesis of the Quaddies, the Miles-books takes place a couple of hundred years later. And one of the character’s in Labyrinth is a Quaddie.

Diplomatic Immunity is not a bad book. It’s a space opera, we meet some old friends as well as some new and it’s fast paced and pretty exciting. But we are back to just Miles POV and after having seen the world from Ekaterin’s eyes for two books, it feels a bit strange to not get her thoughts on her marriage. She evolves from an abused wife to a confident and happy woman, but we aren’t allowed on the last leg of the journey. This is especially jarring as Miles is removed from the action by the end of the book and it is actually Ekaterin who makes sure that the day is saved. It ought to have been at least a hundred pages about that, but what we get are fifteen. The book isn’t even very long, just about 300 pages, many of Bujold’s books are much longer. As I understand it Bujold had planned to write Ekaterin’s POV as well, but was pressured to write it shorter so it could be published sooner. She regrets that and I do too. I usually don’t care for new editions of books with extra material, but in this case I think it would make for a vastly better book.

By the by, if you want to sample Bujold’s books, most of them have a couple of free chapters available at Baen Books. Especially Shards of Honor which actually has about half the book there for free reading.

What I will be reading next: Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold.

The Rats In the Wall by H. P. Lovecraft.
