Dear Yuletide writer,
I hope you will find this letter useful. Here are some general likes and dislikes. I’m fine with any rating. My default choice are either gen or het, but there are some variation for specific fandoms. Please note that I have requested the characters I want in a fic, but that you are free to include any additional character you like, unless I have clearly stated it’s a character I don’t want.
I like: Missing scenes, epilogues and AU’s which explores alternate timelines. Bittersweet romances. Introspection fics. Funny fics where the character banter or snark at each other. I also enjoy angst and darkfic for all my requested fandom apart from Elizabeth and the Garrett Theatre. I have more OT3s than OTPs, but unless you go the darkfic route, I want the relationships to be equal, or possibly two persons who worship a third. Also, I love fashion history and I love it when clothes are correctly described. I definitely have a costume kink.
If you want to write darkfics, then I’m happy with mind control, manipulation, non-con, dub-con, psychological sadism and BDSM. I do like a proper grounding for them, though, not just thrown in for the sensation. I also like when the personal consequences from traumatic experiences are explored. Minor violence is ok. I’m fine with both happy and unhappy endings.
I don’t like: Character bashing, or character’s suddenly changing personalities. A good character may go darker or an evil one nicer, but then I like to have a good psychological reason for that change. Modern AU’s. A/B/O.
I’m totally squicked by: Amputation, body horror, cannibalism blood play, wet, scat, child abuse, medical experimentation, torture, incest, animal abuse, mpreg and too gory violence.
The Case of Charles Dexter Ward
Characters: Eliza Tillinghast, Joseph Curwen, Ezra Weeden
Lovecraft isn’t exactly known for his excellent female characters. Joseph Curwen’s wife Eliza fare better than most, but we are still only given the bare bones of her life. I’ve always wondered about her life. She is forced to marry, but even if Curwen is an evil man, he surprises everyone with becoming a decent husband. I would love a story about her. Did she came to love her husband or did she continue to long for the man she had to give up. Was she completely clueless about her husband’s real character and got a nasty surprise after his downfall. Or did she figure things out and provided help and information to bring him down? How come she never married Ezra after she became a widow?
Elizabeth of the Garret Theatre
Characters: Alison Verney, Elizabeth Verney, Nan Verney, Nigel Gifford
I’m not a huge fan of fluffy and cozy fics, but that is just what I crave for this fandom. No angst and darkness here, please. This book is one of my go to comfort reads, and I always wanted more of the Verney girls lives. I would love both missing scenes and fic about what happens after the book.
Ivanhoe
Characters: Rebecca of York, Brian de Bois-Guilbert
At the tender age of five I saw a 50’s adaption of Ivanhoe and fell in love with Elizabeth Taylor’s Rebecca, and George Sanders in general. I found Ivanhoe a rather dull hero, but I’ve always been fascinated by the relationship between Rebecca of York and Brian de Bois-Guilbert. I would love a missing scene between them, but most of all I would like an AU where Bois-Guilbert doesn’t die and they meet again, a few years down the line. Not necessarily a love story, I just would like to see what kind of man he has become. Has he truly changed, and how would Rebecca react if he has.
Versailles
Characters: Fabien Marchal
I fell in love with this show earlier this year, much to my own surprise. The 17th century is one of my favourite historical periods, as well when it came to the fashion, so I was prepared to be annoyed by factual errors. But even if the writing plays fast and loose with what really happened occasionally, I really enjoyed the show. I’m drawn to character with ambiguous moral, straddling the line between good and bad, so it’s not surprising Fabien Marchal quickly became my favourite.I want a Fabien-centric fic, which is why I’ve only specified him, but I’m happy with him interacting with any other character/s. Gen or het is up to you, and though I prefer not to have Fabien in a m/m pairing, I'm fine with slash between other characters.
The Mummy
Characters: Evy Carnahan O'Connell, Ardeth Bay, Rick O'Connell
I re-watched the two first Mummy-movies a few months ago, which sparked life into an old favourite. Much to my surprise I suddenly developed a hankering for Rick/Evy/Ardeth and if you enjoy writing that, I would me more than happy. However, I would be happy with a fic which doesn’t too.
Please, no Alex O’Connell.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
Characters: John Childermass, John Segundus, Lady Emma Pole
A fascinating multi-level book with so many interesting characters. I also hugely enjoyed the TV-series for its casting and settings, if not always how they handled the story. The reason I went for the TV series in my requests is because I wanted to include John Segundus because Childermas/LadyPool/John Segundus is one of my OT3. And Childermass is my favourite character, so consider him essential, John Segundus, Lady Emma Pole most welcome and any other character perfectly fine to include.
