How do you feel about fanfic and sequels? A couple of months ago i wrote a Versailles-fic; Show Me. I knew from the start how I wanted it to end, and though it’s a fairly open ending, I feel it’s an ending. I hadn’t planned to write more. But now the story won’t leave me alone and more have been written. Even if it takes place some time after the first fic, it’s still the same story, not a new plot with the same characters. But I’m not sure if I should post the newstuff as new chapters or as a sequel. I’m not overfond of sequels myself, but I read them if I have liked the first story. What would you prefer? A sequel or new chapters, even if the “old” fic has been labelled finished?

I love sequels to be honest, but mostly only for fanfic and movies. That's why gravity of love is a 4 part series

Thank you for your input! I'm pretty certain it will be a sequel. :)

I think some people would be annoyed or pleased by either! You know what people and fandom are!

So, I would say: do what feels most right to you. If it feels like a continuation, make it so and just add an author's note or something, and if it feels better to you as a sequel, then make it a sequel!

(I'm v helpful, I know, sorry.)

I suppose if your fic has been posted as 'complete' for a few months it would be better to post the new writing as a sequel and put notes that it's a good idea to read the first fic?

Yes, I think that will be the best way. :)

I think I'd be inclined to write it for a bit until it comes to another natural pause, and then look at whether it can be revised to make it feel a little more complete with a bit of introduction.

I wouldn't just add it as extra chapters if the story has been complete for a while, because that would mean someone who really liked the first story might not realise they were there. I'd do it as a sequel, but I'd look at whether I could give it a bit more shape too.

I would happily read either a sequel or new chapters for fics I love. Possibly new chapters would get more readers since people can subscribe to fics?

Thank you for your input. There aren't that many subscribers to this fic, so I don't Think I will lose any readers for that reason. :)

Since your original story was complete, I'd post it as a sequel or a related story. That's what I tend to do when I get an idea for a new story in a fanfic world I've built.

I've had stories I thought I would write sequels to that never materialized, and one-offs that have turned into long series. And some of those have been my best-reviewed fics to date. Honestly, as a reader, as long as the sequel didn't leave me hanging too badly, I love getting more of a fic/'verse that I loved.

Happened to me too- some stories don't let go. :) I'll make this one a sequel, I think. :)

I would just say post it as a sequel, which works out great for fics I think. I love how AO3 lets you make a series out of things, especially if you want to do sequels and prequels. Happy writing!

I woild post it as a sequel with a link to it from the original story, a lot of readers won't check for new chapters if the fic had previously been labelled complete

I agree, go with a sequel. Also, I am always happy to see a surprise sequel to a story I liked.

Good luck with the writing!
