Day 03
In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Well, people already on my f-list will probably yawn as I just posted my end of the year fic-meme, but here goes. I tried to pick favourites from various fandoms, so I ended up with six recs. Ooops.
Title: Silence
Fandom: Peter Pan
Rating: Teen and up
Genre: Horror
Word Count: 957
Characters: James Hook, Peter Pan, Wendy Darling
Warnings: Character death
Summary: Hook's victory over Peter Pan has not quite the result he had expected.
Why I rec it: This is the oldest story I rec, written for more than ten years ago. I lived inside a depression for many years and I wrote this when I was at my worst. It’s eerie and bleak and I frighten myself when I re-read it.
b>Title: Crow’s Feet on the Prettiest Eyes
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: All ages
Genre: Romance
Word Count: 741
Characters: The Curator, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: None
Summary: Sarah Jane meets the Curator at the National Gallery.
Why I rec it: Up until this fic I had basically just written horror or dramatic stories. i didn’t know I had it in me to write something sweet. But I think this story is just that and I am very happy with the story.
b>Title: Solace
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: Teen and up
Genre: Gen, drama
Word Count: 2112
Characters: Nyssa of Traken, The Master (Ainley)
Warnings: Mourning, mind games
Summary: Night after night Nyssa dreamt about her father. But something about those dreams were not quite right...
Why I rec it: I deal with bad things in life with writing about them and it helps a lot. I lost a relative very unexpectedly in December 2014 and as a result, many of the fics I wrote dealt with loss. How many of us wouldn’t want a chance to see a lost loved one again, even if it’s only an illusion?
b>Title: Professor Keller
Fandom: Doctor Who
Rating: Teen and up
Genre: Horror
Word Count: 8827 so far (WIP, 5 chapters so far)
Characters: The Master (Delgado), OFC, OMC, the Third Doctor, the Brigadier, Sarah Jane Smith
Warnings: Mind Games, mind control, dominance, implied/referenced dubious consent (both het and slash), suicide attempt, character death, minor violence.
Summary: Alison and Peter Grey are living a charmed life, young, wealthy and in love. Until they meet a Professor Keller and find themselves trapped in a spiralling nightmare. Set between Terror of the Autons and The Mind of Evil. It’s not a Doctor-centric fic, this is a story about two of those people who were unfortunate to meet the Master when the Doctor wasn’t around to save them.
Why I rec it: I feel like a bit of a broken record to talk about this fic again, but it is my baby and I think it’s the best things I have written, so how can I not rec it? It’s not a happy story so you probably won’t like it if you don’t like darkfics. And I know original characters can frighten people away, but I promise they are not Mary Sue’s.
Title: All Within
Fandom: Harry Potter
Rating: Mature
Genre: Drama
Word Count: 11704 (9 chapters)
Characters: Lucius Malfoy, Luna Lovegood, Molly Weasley
Warnings: Imprisonment, non-con, underage, referenced character deaths
Summary: He had forgotten about the girl in the cellar. Lucius Malfoy is given a price, but Luna Lovegood is not an ordinary girl and perhaps Lucius isn't quite who he was either. Not exactly a romance. An AU-fic taking place after Deathly Hallows. The first chapter contains a scene with non-con, though neither violent nor explicit. Underage because Luna is turning seventeen sometime during this fic.
Why I rec it: Sometimes when I read fics I wonder why the author has chosen to depict the characters in a particular way. As a writer of fanfics, the characters are already there, we are borrowing from someone's original work, but we also interpret the characters ourselves. Sometimes filling in gaps, sometimes making a certain characteristics more dominant and, at times, completely disregarding the original author's idea and making something new. I aim, in my writing, to stay true to the original character, but my interpretation may not be the same as yours. I do spend a lot of time thinking of what kind of person a character is and how s/he may react under certain premises. This fic started out when someone wrote to me and asked if I couldn't write a Lucius/Luna romance. As they are two of my favourite Harry Potter characters I was intrigued by the idea, but this didn't really turn out a romance. And the stumbling block was how I see these two characters.
One of the most important aspects of Lucius character is his capability to love. He is not a psychopath; he genuinely loves his family, though he is also selfish, a bigot, a coward and a racist. You could choose to see all his actions as driven by his love for family, he could very well genuinely believe that a world without muggle-born and half-bloods would be a better place for his loved ones. Is he evil? Perhaps. Is he a sadist? Not necessarily. In my fic here, he is neither evil, not a sadist, though he is not a very nice man. It never made it into the fic, but I had originally planned to write in some more background history with a very dominant father who brought him up to feel superior over pretty much everyone and it was certainly in my mind when I wrote. I also think he could do some rather awful things, but that it would also leave marks.
Luna is a girl who has been bullied. In the books her reaction to her bullies is one that I recognise, she withdraws from them mentally, keeping her personality intact, but quite hidden. She’s quiet, or she talk nonsense. I think he would probably withdraw even further in a situation when she is helpless and in doing so protect herself mentally. Another aspect of Luna's personality that I find essential is her empathy and her ability to believe, which would also help her survive.
Writing this story I came to realise I couldn’t write a love story, so this is a story about adaption, change and forgiveness.
Title: Clara
Fandom: The Historian/Dracula
Rating: Teen and up
Genre: Horror
Word Count: 5681 (4 chapters)
Characters: Dracula (Vlad Tepes), OFC
Warnings: Brief violence, rape attempt.
Summary: A young librarian is unfortunate enough to attract Dracula's attention. This story is based on Dracula as he appears in Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian and takes place sometimes in the 1950's.
Why I rec it: The myth about Dracula is so well-known, which mostly makes this a story about Dracula, rather than a fanfic. However, it was The Historian that inspired me to write about Dracula. I really like how she entwine the historical person with the myth, though that is a plot device used by many.
