Basically that it wasn't until the 30's that more complex perfumes were created for men. Before that, it was simple aftershave, like bay rum, or leather scent which were pretty one-note. (Up till the end of the 19th century all perfume were actually unisex, but women's perfume started to make the scene around 1900.) :)
