Day 13

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Yay, recs! After some consideration I decided to choose three fanfics that touches down on three important points of my fandom life.

Title: Darkness & Light 1: The Potion Master's Apprentice
Author: R.J. Anderson
Fandom: Harry Potter
Length: 12,283 words
Rating: K+
Warnings: None stated
Characters/pairing: Severus Snape/OFC and various characters from Harry Potter
Summary: A young blind woman comes to Hogwarts on a secret mission, only to find herself allied with the one man she has been warned not to trust, Severus Snape.
Why I rec it: This is the very first fanfic I ever read, back in 2001. I had no idea what fanfiction was when I came across it, but I had just read all the (then) available Harry Potter books and I wanted more. Don’t let the OFC deter you from reading it, I found Maud a charming character. And I love Athena, her help owl. I also very much enjoyed her portrait of Snape. However, as this fanfic was written in 2001 and revised in 2003 it only follows canon up until OotP. I still warmly recommend it. And if you like it, take a minute and tell the author, I’m sure she will be delighted with a review for such an old fic!

Title: By Moonlight
Author: hereswith
Fandom: Peter Pan
Length: 540 words
Rating: T
Warnings: None stated
Characters/pairing: Captain Hook/Wendy Darling
Summary: Wendy is all grown up, but when she dreams of Neverland, she doesn't dream about Peter Pan.
Why I rec it: I started to read fanfics in 2001, but I didn’t really immerse myself in fandom until early 2004 after the movie Peter Pan. As so many others I was mesmerized by Jason Isaacs performance as Hook. And it gave me the impulse to start writing fanfics of my own. This, the first of a series of vignettes, is such a lovely little fic. Poetic and wistful and might be really happening or just a dream. It’s followed by The Darkened Night and All In Splinterst.

Title: Two Birds In A Cage
Author: Daystar Searcher
Fandom: Doctor Who
Length: 54453
Rating: Teen
Warnings: Explicit Violence, Non-Con
Characters/pairing: The Third Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Liz Shaw,
Summary: Inferno-verse AU. Miles below the earth, in the most secret and heavily guarded of all their prisons, they keep a man who builds them weapons that are decades and sometimes centuries ahead of their time. Reports come back of the things they bring him: books, chemicals, lab equipment. Young girls.
Why I rec it: I had a pause from fandom for several years. i wrote some fanfics, but not much. And then, in late 2014 I suddenly feel heads over heel in love with the fandom of Doctor Who. I have loved the show for thirteen years, so it was a bit unexpected. This is one of the best, if not THE best fanfic I have ever read. This is a very dark story and even if the non-con and violence mostly takes place off-stage, there are memory flashes and dealing with both the physical as well as the psychological aftermath. Three and Sarah Jane are instantly recognizable, while still being marked by their experiences. It’s a remarkable story about horrible and traumatic events, but also about friendship and building trust. Unfortunately it’s not yet finished, though still updated. If you prefer to read finished fics, then I can recommend any other fic by this author, period. She writes very well! For example an one-shot prequel to this story; Two Hours/Eventually. It features the Third Doctor and Jo Grant, is rated Teen and warns for references to violence and sexual assault.
