This summer I participated in Fandom Giftbox 2016. I kind of forgot about it because there were several months until the reveal, so I was pleasantly surprised when I received two lovely fics.

Here’s my lovely/creepy gift for Rarepair Fest. It think it was beautifully written and did a good work on capturing the possessive nature of Dracula. And Vanessa’s ambivalence. The author is not yet revealed.

Title: Shade of Darkness
Fandom:Penny Dreadful
Length: 1004
Rating: Teen
Warnings: None stated
Characters/pairing: Vanessa Ives/Dracula
Summary: “I love you for who you are, not who the world wants you to be.” It kept echoing in her head as the darkness enveloped her, as he enveloped her and the sharp pinch in her neck grew hot. The two pin-pricks ached through her very being, tugging through her soul, through her body, through her very being.

And bonus rec. I don’t read much smut anymore, but being on a little Mummy-trip right now I couldn’t resist this. I didn’t regret it, the smut is very well-written. And, above all, the characters are spot on, behaving accordingly.

Title: God of A Good Time
Fandom: The Mummy series
Length: 4080
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Dubious consent- mainly because it’s a case of “the hieroglyphs made them do it”
Characters/pairing: Ardeth Bay/Evy Carnahan O'Connell/Rick O'Connell
Summary: Evelyn wants to discover the fabled hieroglyphics in the crumbling temple of a god of sexual pleasure. Rick and Ardeth go along to keep her out of trouble. (It doesn't work.)

I try to get into the habit of making a fanfic rec every Sunday and usually fail miserably. But have decided to call this a honorary Sunday and bring you this:

Title: Feather On the Nile
Author: Glinda
Fandom: The Mummy series
Length: 3324 words
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Polyamory, period-typical homophobia, canon-typical violence, extortion, protectiveness, curses
Characters/pairing: Ardeth Bay/Evy Carnahan O'Connell/Rick O'Connell
Summary: It’s a nice fantasy but that’s all it is: a fantasy. So he leaves them there, before he can be tempted by things that can never be. (It's a good plan, shame it didn't work.).

Why I rec it: I re-watched The Mummy recently and was reminded of how beautiful and attractive all the main characters in this movie are. So I happily swooned and then went in search for some fanfic. Sometimes, when you are really lucky, you stumble over a fic you have always wanted to read. I like polyamory in fics, but rarely find any I like. Perhaps because it’s so very easy to write something where the third party is in some way described negatively, or as a less meaningful partner. This fic, I love! It’s sweet, funny and sexy. And if the idea that one third of the constellation thinks he isn’t part of an epic love story- well, then that is only in his head.

Excerpt:It’s not until he’s on a boat halfway across the see that it dawns on him that they both said ‘us’. Come back to us. He has a lot of time on the boat to ponder on what they meant by that, what arrangement they have made between themselves about him. It lurks at the back of his mind throughout his adventures, underscoring the near misses along with his eventual success. He arrives back in Egypt no nearer to a conclusion.

So he does the only sensible thing. He takes an extra long rotation on guard duty out in the desert without letting either of them know he’s back.

Yuletide

I ended up waiting for Yuletide to open and gobbled up my fic at once. I really liked it and can recommend it:

Title: Not Quite Vor
Fandom: The Vorkosigan Saga
Rating: Teen
Genre: Character Study
Word Count: 1943 words
Characters: Olivia Koudelka, Dono Vorrutyer, Ludmilla "Drou" Droushnakovi, Donna Vorrutyer
Pairings: Olivia Koudelka/Dono Vorrutyer
Warnings: None
Summary: Deportment isn't the sum of a girl's education when she grows up Koudelka. Few people stop to remember that quieter than Martya or gentler than Delia doesn’t mean particularly gentle or quiet.

I also got a very positive, several paragraph's long review on my gift fic, so I think I can safely assume that my recipicent really liked the story! And I think my treat-ee liked the treat as well. I hope all my fellow Yuletiders got fic they liked too!

I've been reading around today, but quite slowly as I'm determined to review everything I read on Yuletide. I have a massive to-read list right now!
